SALMON — An Indiana man on a hunting trip died on Saturday after his handgun reportedly accidentally discharged.

According to the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a report of an accidental gunshot wound on Saturday around 9 p.m.

The reporting party stated they were in the area of Moose Creek/Haystack Road and that a person in their hunting group had been alone in a wall tent when the rest of the group heard a gunshot.

The person in the tent was identified as Seth Nicholas Pritchard, 31, of Kokomo, Indiana.

Pritchard was reportedly changing his clothes when his handgun accidentally discharged and struck him in the chest.

The group later told law enforcement they were able to dress the gunshot wound and call 911. Pritchard was reportedly still conscious and alert, but having a hard time breathing while waiting for help.

Air Idaho Life Flight, Salmon Ambulance, the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office, and a Salmon City Police Officer were all dispatched to the area.

When they arrived, Pritchard had reportedly lost consciousness and had no pulse. A deputy performed life-saving measures, but he was later pronounced dead on the scene.

The incident is still under investigation by the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office.
