Yellowstone’s winter shutdown is days away. Here’s what visitors need to know

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — Time is running out for visitors hoping to drive through most of Yellowstone National Park this year.
Saturday, Oct. 31, will be the final day most park roads are open to regular vehicle traffic before winter closures begin Nov. 1, weather permitting.
The park will close its West, South and East entrances, along with nearly all roads, to prepare for winter operations. The closures will continue until the start of the snowmobile and snowcoach season on Dec. 15.
The road between Tower Fall and Canyon Junction, which crosses Dunraven Pass, will also close after Oct. 31, weather permitting.
One route will remain open through winter. Visitors can still drive between Yellowstone’s North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana, and its Northeast Entrance near Cooke City and Silver Gate, Montana. The route passes through Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction and Lamar Valley and remains open year-round when weather allows.
Park officials urge visitors to prepare for rapidly changing weather, possible road closures and limited services. Drivers should carry blankets and other cold-weather supplies, keep their gas tanks full and check road conditions before traveling.
Visitors can get updates by checking the National Park Service’s Yellowstone road conditions page, texting 82190 to 888-777 to receive road alerts, or calling (307) 344-2117 for recorded updates.
Although much of Yellowstone will close to regular vehicle traffic, surrounding communities in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho remain open year-round, offering visitors opportunities for fall and winter recreation.
