Obituary
Philip Moye
December 18th, 1946 - November 3rd, 2026
Philip Lewis Moye (Phil), 79, of Ammon, passed away Nov. 3, 2026, at his home in the company of his wife & family. Phil was born December 18, 1946, in Atlanta, GA, to Dorothy Barnes Moye and Lewis Moses Moye, the first of three children. With black hair and big almond-shaped eyes, strangers often commented, “He is the cutest baby they’ve ever seen.”
As an Air Force brat, he lived on bases throughout the southern USA and Puerto Rico, where he played ball, joined the Boy Scouts, fished, hunted, scuba dived, and enjoyed family gatherings. He developed a fine-tuned taste for Southern Cuisine, especially seafood and catfish.
Phil graduated from Gordon High School in Atlanta, then attended DeKalb College when his draft notice came up; Phil joined the Army Signal Corp. Graduating from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology while stationed in Italy.
Phil was stationed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey; Fort Huachuca, Arizona; Fort Gordon, Georgia; Camp Ederle, Italy; and several Army and Air Force sites in Germany.
Phil had a band of Army buddies during his career. At one of their parties, he met Maureen C. Stoddard from Idaho. Following a whirlwind romance, they married on March 24, 1972 (the anniversary of both of their fathers’ births) at the Rathaus in Kaiserslautern (K-Town), Germany, then enjoyed 54 years together.
During his 20 years in the Army, they had two children, Pamela (born in Germany) and Thomas (born at Fort Huachuca). With them, they traveled throughout Europe and the USA, camping, Volksmarching, and enjoying local cuisine and cultures.
Phil retired with the rank of Sargent First Class, then moved his family to Idaho. His mother-in-law, Cecilia E. Stoddard, welcomed him with open arms, often baking rye dinner rolls for him.
Phil and two friends started Intermountain Phone Company in Idaho Falls. After work they would relax at the R&R bar, where Phil enjoyed good fellowship. Some of the patrons encouraged him to join the Elks Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE). He also fished, hunted, cross-country skied (learned in Garmisch, GER), joined a gun club (looked sharp in his western hat) along with taking home several shooting trophies, and enjoyed family weekends on a pontoon boat. After his second retirement, he became bored and worked part-time at the Walmart in Ammon, Idaho.
Until Pam and Tom spread their wings and soared, they continued to travel with us. Tom married Tina Fiegl from Bavaria, Germany; they presented us with Torsten Philip Moye, our only grandchild.
Philip (Folup) and Maureen (Reen) continued to travel, spending time in Las Vegas with family and cruising oceans & rivers at least twice a year. We visited all 50 states and Puerto Rico; The Great Wall of China, Normandy Beach, The Amazon, Canada, Central and South America, Antarctica, Australia, the waterways of the USA, most of Europe, Alaska with Torsten, and much more. Philip visited every continent except Africa.
Phil will be sorely missed by Maureen. He was a southern gentleman with ladies, had a wry wit with a quick mind (especially math and spelling), a cruciverbalist, a keen observer of humankind, slow to anger but when he did. . ., enjoyed a good bourbon, an avid reader (extreme book nerd), a conscientious citizen (voted on the 3rd of November), disliked dancing but always danced the Tennessee Waltz with Maureen.
Philip is survived by his wife Maureen C Moye of Ammon, ID; Daughter Pamela Ann Moye (John Ricker of Los Angeles, Cal.); Son Thomas Orrin Moye (Tina Fiegl-Moye); Grandson Torsten Philip Moye of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Sister Falma Jean Moye, of Tucson Arizona; Brother Tom Moye (Jayne) of White River Junction, Vermont; Nephew Lewis Moye (Susie) Washington, D.C.; Niece Ablin Moye, Vermont; Cousins in the south and on the east coast.
Philip was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy Barnes-Moye and Lewis Moses Moye; his in-laws, Cecilia E. Stoddard and Orrin Stoddard.
Our deepest thanks and gratitude to Bonneville County Deputy Sheriffs, Fire Department, EMTs, and Coroner for their support and understanding in our time of need and loss.
There will be a memorial ceremony in the spring or summer when more family can attend.
Please lift a glass of bourbon (Phil liked Maker’s Mark) or glass of water in Phil’s honor on December 18, 2026, to celebrate his 80th birthday. And please plant some daffodils (one of his favorite flowers) to enjoy in spring.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Cremation is under the care of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls.
Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.coltrinmortuary.com.
