Obituary
John Anderson James
December 29th, 1931 - November 3rd, 2026
With much sorrow, we announce the passing of John Anderson James, at the age of 94. He was living at Fairwinds Senior Living Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho, when a sudden illness occurred and brought an end to his amazing life. At the time of his passing, he was 2 months short of his 95th birthday.
John was born December 29, 1931, in Malad City, Idaho, to Lurlene Anderson and David James. He was the youngest of four children.
John graduated from high school in Malad City, Idaho. Following graduation, he served his country by joining the United States Navy and serving for four years.
Following his honorable discharge in 1955, John returned to Idaho, where he met Zelda, the woman who would become the love of his life. They were married on July 8, 1956, in Malad, Idaho, beginning a marriage that would span 65 years.
John and Zelda moved to Logan, Utah, where John attended Utah State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. During their time in Logan, they welcomed their first two sons, John Earl and Daniel R. James.
Shortly after graduating, John was selected by the Atomic Energy Commission for a highly competitive program in nuclear studies. This opportunity took the young family to Chicago, Illinois. Upon completion of his studies and work there, John was transferred to the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory near Idaho Falls, where he continued his career in the nuclear field for over 30 years. While here, they added three more children to their tribe, Michael K., Timothy D. and JoAnna.
John often referred to his children as “the jewels of his crown.” Those words reflected the pride and love he held for his family. The lessons he taught were not always delivered through words, but through example. His children learned the value of hard work, often by working alongside him on the farm, and grew up understanding that there was dignity in a job well done.
John was deeply committed to his community and especially to young people. He was actively involved in Idaho Falls Junior Posse, and the Boy Scouts of America, helping mentor young adults to develop the character and skills they would carry throughout their lives.
John had a love for the outdoors–hunting, fishing, camping, and working on his farm. But perhaps his favorite activity was dancing on Friday nights with his beautiful Zelda.
John was a faithful and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where his faith was an important part of his life and family.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Zelda; his oldest son, John Earl; his brothers, Robert and Garth; his sister, Doris; and his great-granddaughter, Catherine Cooper.
He is survived by his children, Daniel, Michael, Timothy, and JoAnna; 12 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. His family was his greatest legacy, and the values he instilled will continue through the many generations who follow him.
In keeping with John’s wishes, a graveside service will be held at Taylor Cemetery in Idaho Falls at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 13, 2026. A viewing will be held at Wood Funeral Home in Ammon on Thursday, November 12, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.woodfuneralhome.com.
