Obituary
Ann Hardy Hopkins
December 18th, 1936 - October 21st, 2026
Anne Hardy Hopkins, 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by family, in Idaho Falls, October 21, 2026.
Anne was born December 18, 1936, in Kinston, NC, to Jesse Edwin Hardy and Katherine Allen Hardy. She grew up in North Carolina, the eldest daughter of 5 siblings. Anne was a graduate of Broughton High School and St. Mary’s College both in Raleigh, North Carolina. While at St. Mary’s, she entered the travel industry working for United Airlines, first in the office, and then when she was old enough to be a stewardess, she moved to New York City to complete her training. She worked as a stewardess for several years during which time she met her future husband, Tim Hopkins, in San Francisco through mutual friends. He was there attending Stanford University. She had many suitors at the time, but when Tim proposed, she said yes and cancelled the rest of her dates.
Anne and Tim were married on June 27, 1959. When Tim graduated from Stanford, they moved to Washington, DC, where he attended George Washington Law School and Anne worked at the White House under Jaqueline Kennedy. Their first daughter, Kate, was born there, and they stayed until Tim finished law school. Upon his graduation they returned to San Francisco. They loved living in the Bay Area, but after their second daughter, Elizabeth, passed away shortly after birth, they decided to move back to Idaho, which was Tim’s family home. Anne was always a southern belle, and considered North Carolina her home, but she has been a part of the Idaho Falls community since 1965, where her children, Hilary and Ted, were born. After raising her three children, Anne returned to the travel industry as an agent, then manager, at Tandy & Wood Travel. She loved to travel and was able to do so throughout her life.
From the time she arrived in Idaho, Anne volunteered her time and creative energies to many community causes and organizations. She participated in the fund-raising activities of the Sacred Heart Community Hospital Auxiliary, which included making beautiful items for the Mistletoe Mart and donating her talents to the Red Velvet Ball. Anne deeply appreciated art and culture, and loved supporting the Idaho Falls Symphony, Museum of Idaho, the Art Museum of Eastern Idaho, and the Colonial Theatre. She was a docent in the galleries at the Idaho Falls Arts Council, a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church, and a member of the PEO sisterhood. She was a strong supporter of education and was involved in the PTA at her children’s schools, was a reading tutor, a girl scout leader, and served as a committee member for the Idaho Humanities Council Education Programs Fund. These are just a few of the ways she served the community.
Anne strongly believed in equal rights for ALL, the role of education and travel in broadening one’s awareness of the larger world, and the need to care for our planet. Anne was a loving and supportive mother and wife, creating a beautiful home for her family and hosting fabulous dinners and parties. Everything she touched became beautiful, and she knew how to make even the smallest things special. She loved being a grandmother to Emma and Lauryn. All who knew her, knew her quick wit, good sense of humor, and love of ice cream. May she rest in sweet peace.
Anne is survived by her daughter, Kate Hopkins Salomon, and spouse, Hopi (Tetonia, ID), and granddaughter, Emma Anne Salomon (Hailey, ID); daughter, Hilary Anne Hopkins (Los Angeles, CA), and son, Talcott Edward “Ted” Hopkins; and granddaughter, Lauryn Elizabeth Hopkins (Phoenix, AZ); her sisters, Martha Hardy George (Greenville, NC), and Edwina Hardy Shaw (Raleigh, NC); and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Elizabeth Anne Hopkins (1964); husband, C. Timothy Hopkins (2021); brother, Ira May Hardy II; sister, Mary Trim, and brothers-in-law, Henry Shaw, and Hal Venable Worth III.
A memorial service for Anne will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 7t, 2026, at the First Presbyterian Church, 325 Elm Street, Idaho Falls, ID. The service will be followed by a reception at the church.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift to one of the following organizations in her name: Idaho Falls Symphony, The Art Museum of Eastern Idaho, “Conversations with Exceptional Women” hosted by The Alturas Institute (a non-profit organization).
The family would like to extend special thanks to Tabatha Swenson and her loving team of young women with Alliance PCS, and the nurses with Ascend Home Health and Hospice for all the gentleness, care and companionship they offered our mother. We’d also like to thank Machelle Bergeman and the staff of Fairwinds-Sand Creek for helping her feel at home the past five years.
