Obituary
Scott Joseph Smith
September 17th, 1969 - October 31st, 2026
Scott Smith, 57, passed away peacefully at his home on Oct. 31, after a brave battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family as he completed his journey on earth.
Scott was the oldest of 7 children born to Ernest Dale and Dolores Ann Smith. In his youth he lived in Virginia, Panama Canal Zone, Texas, and South Dakota. Scott graduated from high school in Rapid City, South Dakota, and served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Seville, Spain mission. Following his mission, he moved to Provo to attend Brigham Young University, where he met his wife, Jennifer Huntsman. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple in the spring of 1993, and were blessed with 4 children over the next several years. Their family moved to Pocatello in 2001 when Scott began working as an attorney at the Racine Olson Law Firm.
Scott was blessed with many gifts in life, but his true superpower was being the world’s best problem solver. Whether it was a complex legal case, a broken machine, technology, car problems, or a tough life dilemma, he had a rare gift for researching, thinking his way through a challenge, and finding a path forward. He was a solid, sure, and steady influence in our lives—the rock our family completely depended on to remain calm in times of trouble.
Scott loved outdoor adventures–motorcycling, backpacking, camping, and kayaking. He also loved playing and collecting board games, and was always on the hunt for new board game friends to bring around the table for a night of laughs and friendly competition.
As much as he loved his work and his hobbies, Scott’s true passion was his family. He cherished his relationships and always made his family a priority. He was fiercely loyal and deeply kind, and was the ultimate champion for his wife, Jennifer, and his kids Jessica, Kaitlyn, Emily, and Brandon—supporting them completely, no matter what path or dream they chose to chase. Scott loved being a grandpa; he was blessed with seven grandchildren, and he loved each one with his whole heart.
Scott was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He lived his life as a true disciple of Jesus Christ.
Scott is survived by his wife, Jennifer; his children Jessica (Jake), Kaitlyn, Emily (Nate), and Brandon; grandchildren Addison, Kohen, McKay, Navy, Nora, Wyatt, and Logan; and a circle of family and friends who will miss his steady and loving presence every day.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the medical teams at the Portneuf Cancer Center, Enhabit Home Health, and Heritage Hospice for their dedicated, compassionate care during his journey.
A funeral service to honor Scott will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints building located at 5425 Bannock Highway, Pocatello, ID. There will be a visitation prior to the service, at noon. A graveside service for Scott will be held the following day at 1:00 p.m. at the Lehi City Cemetery in Lehi, Utah. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Primary Children’s Hospital to help fight childhood cancer.
