Obituary
Scott Wade Peterson
September 21st, 1952 - October 2nd, 2026
Scott Wade Peterson, 74, of Blackfoot, Idaho, passed away at home on October 2nd, 2026, surrounded by family, after a 15-year battle with cancer.
Scott was born on September 21st, 1952 in Logan, Utah, to Arline Holmes and Oren Swanty Peterson. He grew up in the Bear Lake Valley, the youngest of three boys. He loved spending time on the farm, working with his dad and brothers, and creating memories with his cousins and other family who would often visit.
Scott’s life was anchored in a deep and abiding testimony of his Savior, Jesus Christ. As a young man he served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rochester, New York. This experience strengthened his faith and set the course for a lifetime of quiet discipleship. That same devotion guided him in every role he filled: husband, father, friend, and neighbor.
Scott attended Ricks College for a year, then finished his degree in psychology at Brigham Young University.
Scott met and was smitten by Kathy Ann Sorensen while living in Utah, although both grew up in the Bear Lake Valley. They were married on June 2nd, 1978, in the Salt Lake Temple. Kathy was the love of his life; he adored her completely. Together they raised four sons, in a home full of love. All four sons earned their Eagle Scout rank, served missions, and married in the temple. Kathy passed away after a brief and aggressive fight with cancer on May 4th, 2001. Kathy had started a tradition of big family dinners each Sunday. Scott continued that tradition for the next 25 years. Sundays at Scott’s house were full of laughter and food and love.
Scott had a passion for service and helping others. For decades, he gave generously of his time as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, helping boys grow in character, skill and faith. In every season, his life was defined by steady, selfless service to those he loved.
Shortly after his oldest son was born, Scott and Kathy moved to Blackfoot, Idaho to begin his career with State Farm Insurance. Scott loved being a State Farm Agent, and found great joy and fulfillment in helping others and building relationships with policyholders and the community. Scott had a wonderful 45-year career before retiring on July 31st, 2025. After his retirement, the relationships he built with his policyholders and the community remained strong.
Scott leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and selfless service. He will be greatly missed.
Scott is survived by his children, Tyler (Ashley) Peterson of Idaho Falls, Tad (Lacey) Peterson of Blackfoot, Trenton (Jessa) Peterson of Denton, Texas, and daughter-in-law Ariel Peterson of Highland, Utah; and his grandchildren, Elsie, Briggs, Brinley, Brooks, Britton, Bri, Brylin, Ryder, Juliet, Madelyn, Charlie, Carter, and Sloane.
Scott is also survived by his brother, Bruce (Bonnie) Peterson of Farmington, Utah, and sister- in-law Cleone Peterson of Montpelier, Idaho.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents; wife Kathy Ann Peterson; son, Troy Rhett Peterson; brother Ron Peterson; and in-laws Betty and Darrell Sorensen.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 10th, 2026, at the Blackfoot Stake Center, 1650 Highland Drive. The family will meet with friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, October 9th, at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot, and again for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Flowers are welcome, or a gift may be made to Huntsman Cancer Foundation in his memory.
