The 32-year old Gomes hit .262, with 18 home runs and a .377 OBP for the Athletics last season. Gomes has played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals and Oakland in eight full Major League seasons. The Red Sox will be the fourth team he’s played for in the last three seasons.

Gomes joins a Sox outfield that includes Jacoby Ellsbury, Ryan Kalish, Daniel Nava and Ryan Sweeney.

The right-handed hitting Gomes can play both corner outfield positions. His reported positive clubhouse presence  in Oakland is said to be one of the reasons Boston valued him.
