According to Joseph Violante, director of Disabled American Veterans, 20 percent of new recruits are women, 14.5 percent of military members serving on active duty are women, and 18 percent of the National Guard is women.

But, Violante, says the VA was designed for men and is still a male-dominated institution.

“Women now are serving in combat. They have needs and VA needs to gear up to ensure that women veterans can get quality services just like their male counterparts,” Violante said. “We found a number of areas that need to be addressed. Particularly expertise in women’s healthcare issues. Access to safe housing. Childcare. Employment certainly is a key issue.”
