POCATELLO – Idaho State University’s Camerata Singers will perform in Carnegie Hall in New York on May 24. The group will participate in a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s “Requiem” as part of the Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY).

The DCINY is a professional production company with experience presenting at venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. It provides participants with a quality experience with professional musicians and soloists to maintain the integrity of music and ensure a quality experience.

“The opportunity for our singers to perform in one of the most celebrated concert halls in the United States is extraordinary,” said Scott Anderson, ISU Choral Activities and Camerata Singers director. “When any music ensemble performs on the Carnegie Hall stage, they join a tradition dating back to the late 19th century, and the Camerata Singers will join that tradition.”

The group was invited to attend by Jonathan Griffith, co-founder, artistic director and principal conductor for the DCINY because of “the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers,” he stated in a press release after inviting the singers to New York. Griffith will lead the performance and serve as the clinician for the residency.

The singers will spend five days and four nights in New York City to prepare for the concert. Their visit will include rehearsals, as well as time to explore New York City.

“I am excited to experience the rehearsals, which will build excitement for a performance of one of the greatest ‘Requiem’ settings in one of the greatest concert halls in the world,” Anderson said.

The Camerata Singers has been performing in Southeast Idaho since 1968, and has performed a wide variety of pieces including Mozart and Brahm’s “Requiems,” Mozart’s “Mass in G Minor” and Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony.” The group is made of Pocatello community members of all ages. Fifty members will make the trip to New York to perform in Carnegie Hall.
