Penélope Cruz Named “Esquire’s” Sexiest Woman Alive

ABC/Rick Rowell(NEW YORK) -- Penélope Cruz is Esquire magazine's "sexiest woman alive." In the mag's November issue, on which she graces the cover, Cruz, 40, discussed her acting career, saying she had "an attraction to drama" in her teens and 20s."Most of us have that, especially if you are an artist -- you feel like you are tempted to explore the darkness," Cruz explains.

"I could not be less interested now. For me, the most attractive, charming, cool, fun, interesting thing -- how could I call it? A plan,” she adds. One of the topics Cruz is unwilling to talk about is her personal life. When Esquire asked about her husband, actor Javier Bardem, or their two children, she replied, "That is for us."However, the Vicky Cristina Barcelona actress will admit she doesn’t feel like the sexiest woman alive, but more like a mother who doesn’t get enough sleep.Cruz is also tight-lipped about her upcoming movie projects. All she'll say about the first, the Spanish-language film Ma Ma, is that she suffers from an illness that she won't reveal.Of her part in the 2015 spy comedy Grimsby, starring Sacha Baron Cohen, Cruz reveals she’s been watching famous speeches to prepare for her part. However, she won't specify which ones.

Cruz is the 11th woman to be named Esquire's "sexiest woman alive," joining a list that includes Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Rihanna, Charlize Theron and Scarlett Johansson.

Kevin Winter/Getty Images(OLYMPIA, Wash.) -- Actress Misty Upham, who portrayed a housekeeper in the movie August: Osage County, and also had roles in Frozen River and Django Unchained, has been missing for a week, according to police in Washington state. The 32-year-old Native American actress was first reported missing by her father Charles on October 6. She was last seen the day before, leaving her apartment in Auburn, Washington, 20 miles outside of Seattle.Commander Steve Stocker tells People magazine, "Our officers responded to her apartment where she lives with her parents on Sunday for a suicidal call.  When our officers got there, she had already packed up some belongings and left the apartment, so the officers were not able to contact or find her."However, Stocker says she does not fit the criteria for a "missing and endangered person," according to Washington state law, in which the person's missing occurrence has to be "unexplainable, involuntary or suspicious."He adds, "As far as the information we have, she took some things with her, she has a bus pass and even access to some money, and the case has been assigned to a detective, but we aren't putting resources to look for her."Earlier this year, Upham filmed her role in the upcoming movie Cake, starring Jennifer Aniston.

Viola Davis Reveals Lesson Meryl Streep Taught Her

Viola Davis Reveals Lesson Meryl Streep Taught Her

ABC News(NEW YORK) -- For Viola Davis, being the face of How to Get Away With Murder has meant a lot of responsibility. But she’s embraced it with grace, thanks to lessons she picked up from fellow actress Meryl Streep.Davis appeared with Streep in 2008′s Doubt alongside Amy Adams and Philip Seymour Hoffman.“When I got that role, I thought I had won the lottery — I cannot even tell you,” Davis said. “Meryl Streep is the greatest actress because you can see so many different emotions going on in her eyes. … It’s a joy as an artist.”She said that on the movie’s set, Streep had asked for her colleagues’ opinions and never let them hide in the background.“I see her consciously make that effort knowing what her responsibility is from the moment she steps on. And she does it as much as she can,” Davis said. “And I respected that and honored that.”On the hit ABC show, Davis plays Annalise Keating, a criminal defense attorney and law school professor at a fictional school.“‘How to get away with murder’ is her way of being dramatic. … [She] takes her job very seriously and also just wants to provoke these students, wants to manipulate them,” she said. “The classroom is her stage. … She’s MY sexy.”Davis, who was nominated for Oscars for her role in The Help as well as Doubt, said she is aware of the example she sets the moment she steps on the show’s sound stage.“I know that I set the mood and the groundwork and foundation in which people have to create,” Davis said. “And I gotta tell you the person I learned that from is Meryl Streep.”Davis was one of six siblings. All but one was born in St. Matthews, South Carolina, on the Singleton plantation. She moved north in 1965 when she was just a baby. Her father groomed horses at the racetrack. Her mother worked at a factory periodically. She has been outspoken about not having enough food when she was growing up in abject poverty in Rhode Island.“I remember always thinking when I was a kid, remember thinking when people would look at me and go, ‘Oh I know she’s poor. … I would think, ‘Just give me some food and I could take care of the rest,” she said. “Just give me some fuel, you know? But there was such a shame and stigma attached to it.”She now works with The Safeway Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation on their Hunger Is campaign to eradicate childhood hunger. “It’s been cathartic to say I was hungry,” she told ABC News. “I was. I was a hungry kid who could never get at the business of being me, you know? … So it’s my joy and my pleasure to be a part of this campaign.”Davis said her struggles had helped her appreciate the achievements.“I just wanted to find something that I really loved and to build a life around it — and so that’s what I did,” she said.

Is “Walking Dead” Heartthrob Daryl Dixon Gay? Show’s Executive Producer Responds

Is “Walking Dead” Heartthrob Daryl Dixon Gay? Show’s Executive Producer Responds

AMC(NEW YORK) --  As The Walking Dead gears up for its fifth season premiere on Sunday, one of the buzziest issues among fans is if Daryl Dixon, the show’s rugged zombie hunting heartthrob, is gay. But executive producer Greg Nicotero floated a completely different theory.“I think he’s a virgin in my opinion,” Nicotero told ABC's Dan Harris in an interview for Nightline. “I don’t think Daryl has ever been close enough with anyone to have sex so I always imagined that he’s a shy 12-year-old kid who doesn't know how to handle the emotions that he has but has feelings for people on the show that he is close to but I never really imagined one way or the other that he’s had sex.”Daryl, played by Norman Reedus, is the show’s breakout star who is handy with a crossbow, as in, he can put arrows through "walkers'" heads with ease. The quiet character’s love life, which is mostly non-existent, has often been a hot topic among fans who want to know whether he’ll strike up a romance with Beth Greene, Carol Peletier or any of the female characters. But comic franchise creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman set off a firestorm of speculation this summer when he told fans Daryl’s sexuality had been “discussed” among show producers. But Nicotero told Nightline he isn’t fazed by the speculation because it has created a build-up to this new season, and if Daryl does eventually have a sexual encounter, he wants it to be “awkward.”“I don’t think Daryl is the type of guy to just throw someone up against a tree and kiss in the moonlight and once you do that it’s over,” Nicotero said. “I want that to be as awkward as possible and I don’t think Daryl has too much experience in that field.”Nicotero is a jack-of-all-trades behind the scenes on the show -- executive producer, director, special effects, make-up designer. He does it all. In fact, he has directed nine episodes and makes a cameo appearance every season.“I like to because I have fun, it’s like Halloween,” he said. And making the walkers as terrifying and realistic as possible is something showrunners have been meticulous about since season one. Their “authenticity” is what Nicotero believes is the whole crux for the show’s massive success -- the season four finale had around 15 million viewers.“You got to keep the audience, the moment they think something doesn’t look real and you lose them, you never get them back,” he said. “So on The Walking Dead I feel like we were able to establish this world, realistically ... so they didn't have to reach for it anymore, they could allow themselves ... to just fall into the stories that these characters are having knowing that this threat is there and the threat exists.”“If the zombies looked phony or cheesy nobody would care what the actors were doing or what the characters were doing,” he added. The new season of The Walking Dead premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC.

Amanda Bynes’ Parents ‘Very Concerned’ About Her, Says Their Attorney

Raymond Hall/GC Images(NEW YORK) -- Amanda Bynes’s recent behavior has worried some fans. However, perhaps nobody has been more affected than her parents."My clients are very concerned about their daughter," Tamar Arminak, the lawyer for the Bynes family, told ABC News in a statement. "Despite what is being reported, they are doing everything they can to help Amanda."Bynes, 28, had been under a conservatorship since last summer, when she was hospitalized after allegedly starting a fire in a residential driveway. After the mandatory stay in the hospital, she went to rehab for a few months before moving back in with her parents in December. At that point, her lawyer said, she was "very happy to reestablish the loving relationship with her family that she once shared."Things seem to have deteriorated since then. Last month, Bynes was arrested for an alleged DUI, when authorities said the actress stopped in the middle of an intersection. She will be back in court later this month, where she is expected to enter a plea. Then, she made her return to Twitter, where she announced that she is engaged and planning to move to New York City, among other things.

Nick Cannon Speaks Out on Mariah Carey Split

Nick Cannon Speaks Out on Mariah Carey Split

Andrew H. Walker/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Nick Cannon seems to be moving on, and in good spirits, after splitting from estranged wife, Mariah Carey.

"I’m just taking everything one day at a time and just being the best person that I can possibly be at the end of the day," he told Extra at the New York City premiere of the new movie, Addicted, out now.

The America's Got Talent host has even went so far as to cover up his massive "Mariah" tattoo that covered the width of his shoulders. Cannon said he didn't mean to reveal he got his tattoo covered up when leaving the gym in Studio City, Calif. earlier this week, a photo that quickly spread online.

"It’s not finished yet…It wasn’t supposed to be revealed yet…I didn’t know [paparazzi] were there, that’s how sneaky paparazzi are," he said. "I had just gotten it done, it was painful…It hurt a lot and I’m still not finished, I’m still probably like six more sessions away."

Although the two are estranged, Cannon has nothing but nice things to say about Carey. The singer has recently come under fire after videos were released of her performing at a tour stop in Tokyo, sounding less than stellar. "I just wish her nothing but the best...you know you might have an off night here and there, but she’s one of the greatest performers and entertainers of all time, she’s not worried, we’re not worried, just going to keep pushing," Cannon said in Carey's defense.

Cannon and Carey split in August amid rumors of Cannon's infidelity. They married in 2008 and have two children together, twins Moroccan and Monroe.

“People” Magazine Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Retro Taylor Swift Cover & More

“People” Magazine Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Retro Taylor Swift Cover & More

Courtesy People Magazine(NEW YORK) -- Taylor Swift covers People magazine's 40th anniversary issue, which is on stands Friday.  The cover is a recreation of the magazine's very first issue back in March of 1974, which showed Mia Farrow in character as Daisy Buchanan in what was then her current movie, The Great Gatsby.  Inside, the special issue has a look at some of the magazine's most memorable covers, but as Staff Editor Antoinette Coulton points out, it's not all celebrities, all the time."The interesting thing about that [is that] it just runs the gamut -- whether or not it's a celebrity or it's a big crime story," Coulton tells ABC News Radio. "And what we're really good at is sitting down with the celebrities and really getting in-depth on their lives and what they're going through. And it's just a mix of that that our readers seem to love." Among the covers highlighted: the election of Barack Obama, the O.J. Simpson trial, the investigation into Jon Benet Ramsay's death, the story of teen AIDS patient Ryan White, the aftermath of 9/11, the birth of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's daughter Shiloh, the deaths of Michael Jackson and Robin Williams, Adam Levine's selection as The Sexiest Man Alive and features on Madonna, Oprah Winfrey, the British Royal family, Julia Roberts and Britney Spears. The issue includes many additional fun features, such as a list of the advice celebrities would give to their younger selves; scenes from classic movies recreated by stars like Kevin Hart, Sarah Silverman and Seth Meyers; a feature comparing Princess Diana and Kate Middleton; a list of stars who are turning 40 this year; a look at fashion trends; a roundup of the most heinous crimes of the past four decades; and People's "Ones to Watch" list, highlighting the stars of tomorrow."We're used to bringing you the celebs that a lot of people know," Coulton says of the concept. "We wanted to also bring you celebs that we feel are on the rise and hopefully a  year, two years from now they'll be at the level of the Brad Pitts and the Matthew McConaugheys."Running down some of those rising stars on the list, Coulton says, "We've picked people like Meghan Trainor, who had a great hit with the song 'All About That Bass,' which kind of addresses body image and just being happy with yourself. We've got Ki Hong Lee, who was in The Maze Runner, which was just number one at the box office. And we've got the cast of How to Get Away with Murder. So we've got a lot of stars in here that we think people should be looking at for the future." As for why People magazine has been around for 40 years, Coulton says it's simple."I think it's one of those things that readers know that whatever they get from us, it's going to be the truth," she tells ABC News Radio. "We're not going to make things up or speculate. And we go to the source. We go to the celebrities to get the news and they're coming to us. And I feel that our readers trust that if they really want to know what's going on, then People magazine is where they can go.”

Report: Katy Perry to Perform at Super Bowl Halftime Show

Allen Kee / ESPN Images(NEW YORK) -- Insiders tell the New York Post’s Page Six that Katy Perry will be the halftime performer at Super Bowl 49.One insider tells the newspaper, “A deal is being hammered out for Katy to play the Super Bowl.”Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported that the NFL had reached out to Coldplay, Rihanna and Perry, asking them to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show, but the league wanted the artists to pay for the privilege of doing the gig.  The NFL figured the exposure would be so valuable, the artists wouldn't mind giving it a share of their future earnings in exchange.Last Saturday, Katy appeared on ESPN's College GameDay in Oxford, Mississippi, and confirmed there had been "some conversations" about her playing the Super Bowl, but dismissed the notion that she would pay the NFL to perform.

“I would be honored, of course, but I have let them know that I'm not the type of girl that would pay to play the Super Bowl, so the ball is in their field, honestly,” Katy said.Super Bowl 49 is set for Feb. 1.
