Melissa Rivers to Release “The Book of Joan”

Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Joan Rivers' only child, Melissa, has penned a book reflecting on the late comedian's life. The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief and Manipulation will feature "funny, poignant, and irreverent observations, thoughts, and tales" about Joan, who died last year at the age of 81, publisher Crown Archetype announced on Wednesday.“In our family we always believed that laughter was the best medicine. Not only are there less side effects than Prozac but it’s a lot cheaper than therapy. I wanted to write a book that would make my mother laugh. I hope it makes you laugh, too,” Melissa says in a statement. In The Book of Joan, Melissa details never-before-heard anecdotes about life with her celebrity mom and TV producer dad, the late Edgar Rosenberg. For instance, when she was nine months old, her parents gave her as a gag gift to Johnny Carson.“Missy, is there anything better than seeing a really good looking couple pushing a baby that looks like a Sasquatch who got caught in a house fire?” Joan quipped, according to Melissa.Melissa also recalls helpful hints her mother taught her.

“I can do tips and discounts and figure out the number of gay men in an audience to make it a good show. That’s all the math you’ll ever need,” she writes. The Book of Joan will hit bookshelves May 5.

Movie Review: “Fifty Shades of Grey” (Rated R)

Movie Review: “Fifty Shades of Grey” (Rated R)

"Fifty Shades of Grey" - Focus Features(NEW YORK) -- I had zero interest in reading Fifty Shades of Grey, or writing a review comparing the movie to the book. Now, if someone tied me to a bedpost and forced me to read it while lightly flogging me with Cinnabons, I’d be so into it.

By the way, if this review becomes too much to handle, your safe word is “Kanye.”

Our beautiful love story commences when Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) volunteers to interview 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) for her roommate, Kate, a journalism major who’s battling a cold. Anastasia shows up at Grey’s office wearing an outfit that looks like Maria von Trapp made it out of curtains, while her body language screams timid.  On the other hand, she does have a 4.0 GPA, pouty lips and big blue eyes. So, there’s that.

Christian Grey’s dazzling office is completely staffed by women who look like they were hired by a Nordic head-hunting company specializing in Victoria’s Secret models.  When we first meet Grey, he’s standing in his office before floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Seattle. It’s stunning shot, but also makes Grey -- Dornan, actually -- seem far less intimating than he’s meant to be. He’s clearly a handsome fella but I had a difficult time with his physicality, especially in the scenes when he’s being a “dominant.” But first, let’s discuss what works.

Grey’s initial odd but endearing courtship of Anastasia is amusing.  He unexpectedly shows up at the hardware store where Anastasia works and asks her to help him find cable ties, masking tape and some rope.  The audience is in on the joke, but Anastasia isn’t, and Johnson plays it like a pro. Dornan, however, as the handsome, confident and mysterious suitor, gets by at this point on his natural charm. He’s still not quite the presence he needs to be.

The two are falling for one another. That’s a problem for Grey because, as he tells Anastasia, he doesn’t do romance. He has a singular interest -- one that involves floggers, nipple clamps, spanking paddles, handcuffs, and an adorable rabbit named Mr. Peanut.  (Fine, there’s no rabbit.)  Christian explains to Anastasia that he’s what’s called a “dominant” and he would like her to be his “submissive.” It requires signing a contract with very specific rules about how she’s supposed to behave and take care of herself.

Anastasia’s supposedly conflicted about whether to sign, but there’s never really enough doubt shown to make it believable. And while Grey’s conflicted about his feelings toward Anastasia, feelings that may extend beyond his dominant-submissive relationship, it generates almost no dramatic tension. It’s boring.

It’s fair to say, the sensual nature of some of the BDSM scenes in this movie isn’t something you’d normally find in a mainstream film, but based on the mythology surrounding the Fifty Shades of Grey novel, or at least the media narrative about it, the sex scenes are rather timid. Dornan, whom I’m sure both women and some men alike will find appealing when he’s mostly naked, wasn’t particularly convincing in those scenes. He seemed uncomfortable, not like the BDSM veteran Grey is supposed to be.

What may be more surprising than the sex scenes is some of the dialogue, particularly Grey’s response to Anastasia when she asks him if he’s going to make love to her now (I’m not going to spoil it for you).  But then, I believe the sex is just window dressing for the real fantasy here: Anastasia’s ability to change Christian.

Let’s talk about Dakota Johnson. The daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson is easily the best thing in Fifty Shades of Grey. As Anastasia Steele, she’s the perfect blend of innocence and confidence; a stealthy heartbreaker who at first comes across as mousey and innocent, but suddenly and convincingly becomes confident and coquettish. On the other hand, as Christian Grey, Dornan does everything he’s asked to do, but he’s just not the intimidating, confused, tortured presence he’s supposed to be.

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson could’ve done better with pacing and creating more dramatic tension.  Her best work came at the end of the movie, punctuating a film that had been largely devoid of dramatic tension and drama with a well-constructed, emotional moment that almost had me wanting to see what was next.

Taylor Swift Tells Alleged Former Guitar Teacher to Give Up Domain Name

ABC/Lou Rocco(NEW YORK) -- Taylor Swift is not amused. Her team is threatening legal action against a computer tech who claims he taught her how to play guitar and write songs, according to the New York Daily News.Ronnie Cremer, a part-time musician from Pennsylvania, recently purchased the domain name itaughttaylorswift.com, and last week, the paper reports, he received an email demanding he shut down the site. If he refused, they threatened further legal action. The email, from TAS Rights Management, LCC, reportedly said the domain name "incorporates the famous Taylor Swift trademark in its entirety and suggests TAS's sponsorship or endorsement of your website. The Domain Name and your use of the Domain Name are also highly likely to dilute, and to tarnish, the famous Taylor Swift trademark."  "I almost feel like they were trying to bully me a little bit," Ronnie tells the Daily News. "I'm not giving back the domain name. I mean, Go Daddy sold it to me."Ronnie says he doesn’t intend to sell anything on the website, but instead wants it to be a site for untold Taylor Swift stories.

“It's going to be an informational website that basically lets people know what really happened,” he says.As we know, Taylor takes her trademarks very seriously. Last month, she applied for trademarks to several phrases related to lyrics from her 1989 album, such as “This Sick Beat.” And last week, Buzzfeed reported that Taylor’s team threatened legal action against Etsy shops that sell homemade items featuring her lyrics.Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. Tracee Ellis Ross Details What Her Mom, Diana Ross, Taught Her

Tracee Ellis Ross Details What Her Mom, Diana Ross, Taught Her

ABC/Bob D'Amico(NEW YORK) -- Although Tracee Ellis Ross is starring in ABC's new hit comedy, black-ish, she's long been in the spotlight thanks to her famous mom, Diana Ross. The actress says in the March issue of Essence magazine that her mother didn't treat her and her siblings as if they had a silver spoon."I understand how extraordinary my childhood was, and that my mother’s gift and all of the people who’ve loved her [have afforded me] the opportunities I have," she tells the magazine. "I also had a really great mom. We had a lot, and as much as I knew that everybody didn’t live that way, she didn’t raise us with a sense of entitlement.""She used to say things like, 'Oh no, no, no, I worked for all of this,'" she adds, laughing. "'This is mine and I’m not leaving any of it to you. I’m going to spend it, so you’d better get a job, little girl.'"Tracee says those lessons helped her onscreen portrayal of Rainbow, a mother of four, on black-ish."I like being the ‘hot mommy’…also I find that on TV, marriage gets a really bad rap. It’s like this thing you never want to do, and the comedy comes out of what people hate about being married. What drew me to black-ish is that this couple loves each other and the comedy comes out of that," she explained. Her hit series has also inspired some changes in her own life. "I want to have a family, so until that time comes, this show is a brilliant substitute," she says. The comedy, according to Tracee, is also helping viewers, especially when it comes to beauty and acceptance, as her character wears a natural curly Afro."We are expanding the definition of beauty in this country," she tells Essence. "I've been quoted as to saying, 'You hire me. You hire my hair and my a**.' But it's true! And it's a fun part to share with my character. You know that Rainbow gets to wear her hair in a way that's authentic to the kind of woman she is is exciting to me."ABC's black-ish airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. Jon Stewart Leaving “The Daily Show”

Jon Stewart Leaving “The Daily Show”

Martin Crook(NEW YORK) -- Jon Stewart is leaving The Daily Show.

Stewart addressed his impending departure on Tuesday night's episode of the satirical program, which aired just hours after Comedy Central announced the news.

He joked that his 17 years with The Daily Show represents the longest he's ever held down a job by 16 years and five months. He continued, "But in my heart it is time for someone else to have that opportunity."

Stewart, 52, said he's "still working out the details" regarding when he'll step down, speculating that it could be anytime during the second half of the year.

He said he has no specific plans for his future, but he has a lot of ideas. He did point out that he'll be able to finally have dinner on a school night with his family.

World News Videos | ABC World News

Stewart told his studio audience and the viewers watching at home, "This show doesn't deserve even a slightly restless host, and neither do you." He said that while he won't miss being on TV every day, he will miss showing up to work and being surrounded by his staff.

He concluded by calling his stint on The Daily Show an "absolute privilege" and "the honor of my professional life."

On Tuesday evening, Comedy Central released a statement that read, "For the better part of the last two decades, we have had the incredible honor and privilege of working with Jon Stewart. His comedic brilliance is second to none."

The statement added that through Stewart's "unique voice and vision, The Daily Show has become a cultural touchstone for millions of fans and an unparalleled platform for political comedy that will endure for years to come."

Comedy Central noted that Stewart will continue to host The Daily Show "until later this year."

Stewart has been the face of The Daily Show since 1999, when he succeeded Craig Kilborn. He took a hiatus from the program in the summer of 2013 to direct the film Rosewater, which was released last fall.

Larry Wilmore, a former Daily Show correspondent who now hosts The Nightly Show after Stewart, briefly commented on his program, "I think I speak for everyone when I say, we love you, man, and I just want to thank you for everything."

Stewart's announcement comes just two months after The Daily Show correspondent-turned-The Colbert Report host Stephen Colbert left Comedy Central. Colbert will replace David Letterman as host of CBS' Late Show later this year.

Martha Stewart Spills Beauty Secrets

Martha Stewart Spills Beauty Secrets

Charles Sykes/Bravo(NEW YORK) -- At 73, Martha Stewart is constantly fielding questions about how she maintains her ageless appearance. Now the domestic diva is revealing her secrets to glowing skin and hair in the latest Martha Stewart Living. The former model's regular routine is pretty quick, but it's not for folks who like to sleep in. "I spend anywhere from seven to 30 minutes getting my face and hair ready each morning," she said, according to an excerpt in People magazine. "This doesn’t include the time I spend doing advance prep like my daily face mask, which I apply at 4 a.m., and I use hand cream with gloves." To prepare for her photo shoot in the latest issue, Stewart said she got ready days before. "I [started] preparing several days in advance by making sure I didn’t miss a work out, drink any alcoholic beverages, and I made sure I got enough sleep because I wanted to look really good," she said. Though she prefers a number of high-end products for her hair and skin, there's one standby that can be found at any drugstore. "I always have Johnson’s Baby Oil in my medicine cabinet," she said. "At night, I wash my face really well, because I have to have my makeup done a lot. Johnson’s Baby Oil with a warm washcloth is one great way to take it off. I like oil because it keeps my skin very moist, and it works for me. I don’t get clogged pores." For more on Stewart's beauty secrets, check out the March issue of Martha Stewart Living.

All the Latest “Fifty Shades of Grey” News Before Friday’s Premiere

All the Latest “Fifty Shades of Grey” News Before Friday’s Premiere

Focus Features(NEW YORK) -- The hotly anticipated Fifty Shades of Grey opens Friday, and as to be expected, the filmmakers and cast are making the publicity rounds.  One voice yet to be heard from, though, is the writer of the bestselling erotic novels on which the film is based, E.L. James. Asked if she's heard from James while on the promotional tour, director Sam Taylor-Johnson told HuffPo Live on Monday, "No...I think we will get to the end of this -- we've been moving at such a pace -- [that] hopefully when we get to the end of this, that will happen." In the meantime, Taylor-Johnson and stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson are making plenty of headlines on their own. Here's what you need to know about Fifty Shades just days from its release. Why We Haven't Heard from E.L. James Taylor-Johnson has made no secret of the fact that she and James clashed over creative differences on how to bring the books to the screen. "It was tough for many reasons. I know a lot has been said of that," Taylor-Johnson told HuffPo Live on Monday. "The thing was, Erika [Mitchell aka E.L. James] and I did work closely together and I think on any movie set, there's tension, but especially when you have two people with strong visions, you're going to lock horns. And it's important creatively to do that because you thrash things out." Will There Be a Sequel? James wrote three novels about Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, so we are likely to see more of them on the big screen. "I'm signed on," Taylor-Johnson told E! News when asked about plans for a sequel. "Let's see how this one goes first." How They Shot the Sex Scenes "[The sex scenes] were very choreographed," Taylor-Johnson told E! "It had to be choreographed because I didn't want to make them go through it [countless times]. It's an uncomfortable environment. You have to base it on trust. You have to build that trust to get there." Who Won't Be Seeing the Film Johnson, who plays Anastasia, comes from an acting family -- Alfred Hitchcock muse Tippi Hedren is her grandmother and Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson her parents. Hedren has already made it clear she won't be seeing the film. And now, Griffith says she'll pass as well.

"No, she doesn't want me to see it," Griffith told reporters at Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party of her daughter.

"I don't want to see it. I would be very uncomfortable seeing it," she continued. "I am so proud of her and supporting her in every way that I can."

Nor, it seems will Dornan's wife. "She hasn't seen the film," the Irish actor who plays Christian admitted to E! News, adding that she will "definitely not" be watching it with him. "She has a deep understanding of work and how you get work and the process of making films," he said. "That is beneficial." Dakota Johnson's Favorite Sex Scene As it turns out, Johnson has actually banned her parents from seeing the movie. "I don’t want them to see it," she told the UK's Telegraph. "I wouldn’t want to see them doing it. At all!" Having already seen the film, Johnson said watching the sex scenes she was "completely detached."

"It was like watching someone who looked a lot like me doing really bizarre things," she told the Telegraph. But she does have a favorite love scene. She revealed to Access Hollywood, that the moment where Christian uses his mouth to run an ice cube down Anastasia's body was her favorite. She was also pretty happy with the scene where Anastasia loses her virginity to Christian. "The virginity scene is something that is so beautiful," she told Access. "And the way that [cinematographer] Seamus [McGarvey] and [director] Sam [Taylor-Johnson] shot that scene, it's really incredible. And the colors! It's so saturated, and then just watching a really profound moment in a young girl's life, I think that was pretty special to do."

Shirley Manson Rips Kanye West over His Beck Comments

Shirley Manson Rips Kanye West over His Beck Comments

Photo by Paul Archuleta/FilmMagic(LOS ANGELES) -- Shirley Manson has some strong words for Kanye West after the rapper nearly interrupted Beck onstage at the Grammys on Sunday, then criticized Beck's Album of the Year win backstage. West remarked, "Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé." Manson strongly disagrees. In a Facebook post directed at West, the Garbage frontwoman wrote, "It is YOU who is so busy disrespecting artistry. You disrespect your own remarkable talents and more importantly you disrespect the talent, hard work and tenacity of all artists when you go so rudely and savagely after such an accomplished and humble artist like BECK." Manson said West came off as small and petty. "In attempting to reduce the importance of one great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music from every genre, including your own," she wrote. "Grow up and stop throwing your toys around." Manson also advised West that Beyoncé "doesn't need you fighting any battles on her account."

“Billy Madison” Turns 20: Dina Platias, Miss Lippy, Gives a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Film

“Billy Madison” Turns 20: Dina Platias, Miss Lippy, Gives a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Film

Universal Pictures(NEW YORK) -- Twenty years ago on Tuesday, audiences first met Billy Madison, the Adam Sandler character who repeated every grade from elementary school on to prove to his dad that he was capable of being a responsible adult. Billy Madison was a hit at the box office, and for Dina Platias, who played Billy's first grade teacher, Miss Lippy, in the film, it remains a project she's proud to have on her resume. "It definitely touches people, I think because she was kind of a nut job," Platias told ABC News. "It’s funny because this movie keeps on playing, and people freak out about it in the greatest way." Platias, who now works as a TV and film promo writer and Pilates teacher in Los Angeles, said that she first landed the role after a meeting with a Universal casting agent but kept getting pushed back. When it was finally rescheduled, the agent asked her to read for the part, which was originally written for a tall blonde with curly hair. Sandler loved her performance so much that a few days later, she was on a plane to Canada, where they shot the movie. "The energy was fantastic, and there were all these little kids and the kids were that perfect age where they weren't little punks -- they were darling and innocent and Adam was adorable with them," she said. "It was very special...and very sweet to see his interaction with the kids. It was all a sense of play and joy." Platias, who, like Miss Lippy, drove a green car at the time the movie was made, said that many of her character's idiosyncrasies were spontaneous accidents. After she convinced the director to let Miss Lippy wear colorful outfits (originally, she was supposed to wear all beige), she was able to improvise the way she moved and acted, including the scene where she wiped paste on her face. "It was flour and water, and they said, 'You're gonna be sitting in a chair and you're gonna put paste on your face,'" she recalled, adding that she wasn't used to life on a movie set, without rehearsals. "I put the stick in [the paste] and put it right on top of my eyeball. They said, 'Oh my God, I can't believe you put it on your eye!' I kinda got in trouble because they had to re-do my makeup, but I think they used [the take]!" Her recess-dance was equally organic. When Sandler and the director asked Platias what she thought Miss Lippy did at recess, she began doing a dance to "Time in a Bottle." "I did this improvised dance and it was only to make them laugh," she said. "For the actual thing, they put the music in later. I do this thing with my hand and I swirl it up and look at the sky -- that's for "Time in a bottle/box full of wishes." Unfortunately, Platias said that she didn't take any souvenirs from the set, but she did note that the story she read to the class, The Puppy Who Lost His Way, was an actual book made by the crew for the movie. Now, she's rarely recognized for the role, but she thinks that may change soon. "I just recently cut my bangs again," she said with a laugh.

“Harry Potter” Star Michael Gambon Retires from Stage Due to Memory Loss

Brad Barket/Getty Images(LONDON) -- British actor Michael Gambon has been a star of stage and screen for decades, but inspired a whole new generation of movie fans when he starred as Dumbledore in six of the eight Harry Potter movies. Now, Gambon, 74, is retiring from stage theater due to memory loss.In 2009, he had two visits to the hospital after he suffered panic attacks following episodes in which he forgot his lines. Now, the beloved actor spoke with London's Sunday Times about the decision to stop stage acting.Gambon admits for a while he tried wearing an earpiece and having someone read lines to him that he would then recite."There was a girl in the wings and I had to plug in my ear so she could read me the lines," he said. "After about an hour I thought, 'This can't work. You can't be in theater, free on the stage, shouting and screaming and running around with someone reading to you.'"It didn't work. Now he's come to grips with his choice."It’s a horrible thing to admit, but I can’t do it. It breaks my heart," he said. "It’s when the script’s in front of me and it takes me forever to learn it. It’s frightening."He explained why this is such a huge loss for him."Theater's the only place for me to be. When the curtain goes up, on you come. No one’s stopping you. No one can shout ‘cut’. There’s a thousand people sitting there and they can see you moving, all over. They watch every part -- how you walk, how you stand. The way you sit. Melanie Griffith Says She Won’t See “Fifty Shades of Grey”

Melanie Griffith Says She Won’t See “Fifty Shades of Grey”

JOCE/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images(LOS ANGELES) -- Although millions will be headed to theaters this week to see Fifty Shades of Grey, one of the most anticipated films this year, there's one person who won't be grabbing a ticket -- Melanie Griffith, the mother of Dakota Johnson, who plays college student Anastasia Steele in the film."No, she doesn't want me to see it," Griffith told reporters at Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party of her daughter with actor Don Johnson."I don't want to see it. I would be very uncomfortable seeing it," she continued. "I am so proud of her and supporting her in every way that I can."In the film adaptation of the E.L. James novel, Johnson plays many risque scenes as her character enters into an unlikely, and unusual, sexual relationship with business magnate Christian Grey, portrayed by Jamie Dornan.Although it's Dakota's breakout role, Griffith said her daughter didn't need much advice. "She's been on movie sets her whole life. She's observed everything. And she didn't need too much advice; a few things but not anything I could really take credit for," she explained.Still, Dakota told Glamour last month that when it came for her to film scenes in the Red Room -- Grey's hangout for bondage and submission -- she got some great advice from her mom. "The scenes in that room were definitely the most vulnerable scenes in the movie. But it was a very closed set. My mom told me that it’s my right to ask for that during intimate scenes, so it seemed like [Dornan and Sam Taylor-Johnson, the director, and I] were in this little world together."Fifty Shades of Grey arrives in theaters Friday.Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. Why Rosie O’Donnell Hasn’t Addressed Leaving “The View” on the Show

Why Rosie O’Donnell Hasn’t Addressed Leaving “The View” on the Show

Lou Rocco/ABC(NEW YORK) -- On Friday, it was announced that Rosie O'Donnell would be leaving The View and that she split from her wife of more than two years, Michelle Rounds. O'Donnell did not address the exit on Monday's show, and it's for a good reason -- even though this is her last week."Everybody wanted me to talk about it," she said Monday in a video on her website. "I didn't want to talk about it," adding that she's already done interviews and it's basically out there online. At the time of the news last week, O'Donnell's rep told the New York Post, "Rosie has teens and an infant at home that need her attention. This has been a very stressful situation. She is putting her personal health and family first. ABC has been wonderfully understanding and supportive of her personal decision to leave The View. Next week will be her last."On Monday, the comedian, 52, continued, "The truth is, I had a heart attack two years ago and stress is very bad for heart attack survivors."Her goal now is to cut down stress and maximize her well-being."I'm minimizing my stress by leaving The View," she added. "The stress I'm having at home is not easily as remediable. ...It's hard, marriages are complicated and I've got five kids...There's lots of stuff going on at home."O'Donnell continued that all she can control is work, and that's what she's doing by eliminating that stress right now."It was no one's fault but mine that I didn't discuss it today," she said.O'Donnell's last day will be Thursday.Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio.
