Taylor Swift Brings Favorite Story to Life with Small, Pivotal Role in “The Giver”

Taylor Swift Brings Favorite Story to Life with Small, Pivotal Role in “The Giver”

Weinstein Company(NEW YORK) — Taylor Swift had several reasons to say yes to taking the small, but pivotal role of Rosemary in the new film, The Giver. On top of getting the chance to share a scene with Oscar winner Jeff Bridges, who plays her father, this acting gig allowed Taylor to help tell a story that had a profound impact on the way she sees the world. The Giver is based on Lois Lowry’s futuristic novel of the same name, and Taylor first read it in fifth grade. She says, “I didn’t do a lot of thinking about the distant future as far as our society goes at that point in my life. This really kind of switched that up for me, and it really kind of blew my mind in a way that stuck with me.”In The Giver, society has done away with pain and sadness as well as happiness, music and love. One person, known as the Receiver of Memories, now absorbs all of society’s memories and emotions in case they are needed to make a decision. The story deals with the weight of carrying that burden while also imagining a world without emotional or artistic expression.Taylor says, “It celebrates all the things that I hold really dear and the things that are most important to me — like our history and our music and our art and our intellect and our memories. I think that that really had a great deal to do with why I wanted to be a part of this.”Since Taylor writes songs about her own heartbreak and disappointment, a lot of fans reach out to her via social media to tell her about the tough times they’re facing. She thinks those fans will find a message of hope in The Giver.”They can’t image that we can experience such great pain, such intense loss, such insecurity,” Taylor explains, “and the thing that I just wish I could tell them over and over again is that we live for these fleeting moments of happiness. Happiness is not a constant. It’s something that we only experience a glimpse of every once in awhile, but it’s worth it. And I think that’s what they’ll take away from this movie.”Meryl Streep and Brenton Thwaites also star in The Giver, opening in theaters on Friday.Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Chris Rock: Robin Williams Was ‘One of the Funniest Guys’ I Ever Saw

Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Chris Rock remembers the late Robin Williams as one of the funniest men he’s ever seen — and says he’s not surprised to learn that the Oscar winner was struggling with personal demons. In an interview with ABC News, Rock was asked to discuss the impact that Williams had on his life. The comedian shared, “Robin was, is, I hate to say was, is one of the funniest guys I ever saw in my life. I remember the first time I saw Mork & Mindy. And I know this sounds weird, it was like watching, it was the first time I saw an actual human being be as funny as Bugs Bunny.”Rock explained, “When they casted him as an alien it was perfect because he was so from another world.”Rock said Williams was “nice” and “very warm” toward him. He said, “I’m a lot, a little younger than Robin, so it was always a mentoring relationship. As in the last few years we were actually getting to the point where we could talk, you know, shop and wives and, you know, like grown ups.”Rock admitted it isn’t a surprise to him that Williams had personal issues. He commented, “Comedians can be a sad bunch, you know. You know what’s the saying? Ignorance is bliss. So if ignorance is bliss, what’s the opposite of ignorance? Must not be bliss. And your job as a comedian, you know, is basically to notice everything. And the better the comedian, the more aware he or she is of the world around them. So, you know, it can be not a happy place.”

Jeff Bridges Reflects on Working with Robin Williams

Jeff Bridges Reflects on Working with Robin Williams

Jemal Countess/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Jeff Bridges, who first expressed his grief over the death of Robin Williams on the red carpet of his new movie The Giver Monday night, remembered Williams again Tuesday morning at a news conference for the film in New York City.Williams was found dead in his California home Monday at the age of 63.”I just want to acknowledge the fullness of life — the joy and the sadness that is in store for us all,” Bridges said.”He was an amazing man,” Bridges said of his former co-star.
The actor, who shared the screen with Williams in 1991′s The Fisher King, smiled as he shared a story of their time together on set.”Just before I came down [here today], I’m looking out my window to Central Park, my favorite part about New York, and I remember the last scene of me and Robin out there at 4 o’clock in the morning nude — naked!” he said. “Robin is just wild and free…rubbing his butt on the grass, and he goes, ‘You know why dogs do this?! Because they can!’””I just had to share that with you,” Bridges added. “Because that’s what’s going on so strongly and how much I miss him…and what a gift he was to all of us.”Bridges noted that at the after-party for The Giver, held at Central Park’s Boathouse, he saw Radio Man — the guy who inspired Williams’ character in The Fisher King. Bridges said, “It felt like it was, we kind of, I felt Robin’s spirit as I’m feeling him now with us.”Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

“Star Wars: Episode VII” to Resume Filming This Month

Lucasfilm Ltd.(LONDON) — Star Wars: Episode VII is scheduled to return to production later this month, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The J. J. Abrams film went on a two-week hiatus earlier this month after its star Harrison Ford sustained a serious injury. The 72-year-old actor appeared to be in good health and spirits. Sources couldn’t confirm, however, if Ford was flying back to London to join the production.Episode VII is filming at the U.K.’s Pinewood Studios and also stars familiar faces Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker. Also along for the galaxy ride are series newcomers John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow.Episode VII is slated for a Dec. 18, 2015 release.

Towanda Braxton Explains Feud with Tamar Braxton & Her Public Breakdown

Towanda Braxton Explains Feud with Tamar Braxton & Her Public Breakdown

Courtesy of WeTV(NEW YORK) — It’s no secret that Tamar Braxton and her older sister, Towanda, haven’t been getting along. From comments made on social media to the reality show cameras detailing what seems like a fight that won’t end, these two Braxton sisters have been going through it. And fans can watch every moment of it on the forthcoming fourth season of We TV’s hit reality show, Braxton Family Values. In a sneak peek released last month, viewers saw Towanda have an epic meltdown after Tamar storms out of a high end restaurant, with the usually level-headed sister smashing glasses and destroying a table.Towanda tells ABC News Radio that the feud started because she couldn’t believe viewers thought she was jealous of her baby sister last season.”I detested the fact that everybody thought, or everybody was feeling that Towanda was jealous of Tamar. I’m like ‘how dare you think that someone who actually volunteered to carry your child to be jealous?’ That’s ridiculous to me,” she explains. “And whenever Tamar needed, and whenever Tamar wanted me to be there, I was there.”Their sister Trina has her own explanation on what started the tension. She says, “That whole thing stemmed from one of Tamar’s Tamartians telling Towanda that she hopes her kids get raped and killed [on Twitter]. Do you understand what I’m saying? So of course there’s a certain retaliation that wells up in you when you talk about somebody’s children.”Still, Towanda says she eventually broke down because she has been keeping her true feelings hidden for so long. “I couldn’t be emotional. I couldn’t let everybody know how I was really feeling because as soon as I do there’s always a [back]lash. So I suppressed every time,” the mother of two explains. “I think there was only one other time — maybe not that big — I had lashed out and that’s, like Trina said, that’s when someone talked about my children. But when we were sitting together as a family I just felt that I wasn’t being heard, and it was a long time coming.”Trina was also in the room when Towanda broke down, even crying her own tears at the site of her sister. “I’ve never seen Towanda, in all of the years that we’ve been alive, I’ve never seen her blow up like that in my life,” she says. “No matter how much we argue, no matter how much we fuss, no matter how much we fight, when one hurts we hurt too.”Although the season starts off with all of the Braxton sisters — Towanda, Trina, Tamar, Toni and Traci — discussing recording an album together, because of the tension the project may be off the table right now.”The only thing that I can say about the Braxton girls actually completing something together is…(whistles),” Towanda says flatly.”Prior to Braxton Family Values, people were like, ‘OK. When are the Braxton sisters going to do a record or an album or something together?’ And then it seemed more possible when we were doing Braxton Family Values,” Trina adds. “But now that we’re going through tumultuous situations with our sisterhood, and our sistership, and trying to build, and rebuild, and build parameters, it’s becoming a difficult feat.” Watch just how difficult when Braxton Family Values returns to WeTV on Aug. 14 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

ANDREW COWIE/AFP/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — Days after Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson revealed that his mother, Ata Maivia-Johnson, and cousin Lina Fanene had been involved in a car accident that could have claimed their lives, the movie star posted a sweet Instagram picture of his leaving the hospital with the woman who raised him.”Takin’ mama home,” The Rock wrote Tuesday. “Banged up, but she’s a tough one and will make a full recovery.”He continued, “Grateful to see her smile. The Rock is smiling, too, grateful his mother is better and able to go home.In a post from Sunday, Johnson had said that his mother and cousin were struck head-on by a drunken driver last week.”They lived,” he wrote. “First reaction is to find the person who did this and do unrelenting harm to them. But then you realize the most important thing is my family lived thru this and we can hug each other that much tighter these days. Robin Williams’ Kids Can’t Understand Why He Couldn’t ‘Find It in His Heart to Stay’

Robin Williams’ Kids Can’t Understand Why He Couldn’t ‘Find It in His Heart to Stay’

ABC/Randy Holmes(LOS ANGELES) — The children of the late actor Robin Williams spoke out for the first time Tuesday night about their famous father’s death, saying they’ll always cherish their memories of him and can’t understand how he could take his own life when he was loved so much by so many.”Yesterday, I lost my father and a best friend and the world got a little grayer. I will carry his heart with me every day. I would ask those that loved him to remember him by being as gentle, kind, and generous as he would be. Seek to bring joy to the world as he sought,” Zak Williams said in a statement released through the late actor’s rep.“My family has always been private about our time spent together. It was our way of keeping one thing that was ours, with a man we shared with an entire world. But now that’s gone, and I feel stripped bare,” said his daughter, Zelda Williams. “My last day with him was his birthday, and I will be forever grateful that my brothers and I got to spend that time alone with him, sharing gifts and laughter. He was always warm, even in his darkest moments. While I’ll never, ever understand how he could be loved so deeply and not find it in his heart to stay, there’s minor comfort in knowing our grief and loss, in some small way, is shared with millions. It doesn’t help the pain, but at least it’s a burden countless others now know we carry, and so many have offered to help lighten the load. Thank you for that.””To those he touched who are sending kind words, know that one of his favorite things in the world was to make you all laugh. As for those who are sending negativity, know that some small, giggling part of him is sending a flock of pigeons to your house to poop on your car. Right after you’ve had it washed. After all, he loved to laugh too….Dad was, is and always will be one of the kindest, most generous, gentlest souls I’ve ever known, and while there are few things I know for certain right now, one of them is that not just my world, but the entire world is forever a little darker, less colorful and less full of laughter in his absence. We’ll just have to work twice as hard to fill it back up again.”Cody Williams said: “There are no words strong enough to describe the love and respect I have for my father. The world will never be the same without him. I will miss him and take him with me everywhere I go for the rest of my life, and will look forward, forever, to the moment when I get to see him again.”Williams’ wife from 1989 to 2010, Marsha Garces Williams, said: “My heart is split wide open and scattered over the planet with all of you. Please remember the gentle, loving, generous – and yes, brilliant and funny – man that was Robin Williams. My arms are wrapped around our children as we attempt to grapple with celebrating the man we love, while dealing with this immeasurable loss.”
Williams was found dead in his home on Monday. Officials say an investigation is ongoing, and an official cause of death will be determined pending toxicology results.

Robin Williams Died in Apparent Suicide by Hanging

Robin Williams Died in Apparent Suicide by Hanging

ABC/Randy Holmes(LOS ANGELES) — Robin Williams died by asphyxia due to hanging in what was an apparent suicide, the Marin County, California Sheriff’s Department has announced.
At a Tuesday afternoon press conference, Lt. Keith Boyd, chief deputy coroner of the Sheriff’s office, said Williams’s wife, Susan Schneider, left the couple’s home at about 10:30 a.m. Monday, believing her husband to still be asleep.  Williams’ personal assistant became concerned when he couldn’t reach Williams, and gained access to a bedroom, where Williams was discovered, clothed and in a semi-suspended, seated position, hanging from a door with a belt around his neck.
There were also acute, yet superficial cuts on the inside of Williams’ left wrist, and a pocket knife was found nearby.  The cuts were determined to be unrelated to the cause of death.
Officials arrived after a 911 call from a person who was not identified, and who said Williams had apparently committed suicide.  Williams, 63, was pronounced dead at 12:02 p.m.  Officials say there was no sign of a struggle.  They would not say whether Williams left a note.
The official cause of death will be determined pending toxicology results. The investigation is ongoing.

Julia Roberts Talks Motherhood, Movies and Marriage

Julia Roberts Talks Motherhood, Movies and Marriage

The Weinstein Company(NEW YORK) — Julia Roberts serves as a guest editor for InStyle’s magazine’s September issue and shares her thoughts on a number of topics, including her home life, movie career and marriage. The 46-year-old mother of three tells the magazine that when she’s not working, she’s just like a lot of other moms.
“It’s like between grocery shopping, the cooking and the cleaning up and everything — it’s a lot,” she explains, adding, “but it’s not anything that millions of other moms don’t do all the time, so there’s nothing so great about me doing it.”The August: Osage County actress also admits she’s not very competitive when it comes to landing big Hollywood roles.
“I’d been offered Sleepless in Seattle, but couldn’t do it,” she tells the magazine. “[Meg Ryan] and Tom Hanks are just such a jewel of a fit in that. I guess what they did for that moment in time is sort of what [Pretty Woman co-star] Richard [Gere] and I were doing across town, you know?”She goes on to say, “I always feel like there is room for everybody. I don’t consider myself really all that ambitious,” adding, “When I didn’t get a part — even when I was younger and needing to pay my rent — I would think, ‘Oh, someone else got it. She’s going to be so good.’ I never felt sour grapes.”On the endurance of her 12-year marriage to cameraman Danny Moder, Roberts credits clear, effective communication. “I always say…that there are only two reasons why people fight: to be right, or to create peace and harmony.”  Roberts goes on to explain, “If you know which your reason is, that really illuminates why you’re having that conversation. Everything that comes out of your mouth should be properly focused on the point at issue and not what you think the point should be.”The September issue of InStyle hits newsstands on Friday.Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Robin Williams Dead of Suspected Suicide at the Age of 63

Robin Williams Dead of Suspected Suicide at the Age of 63

ABC/Randy Holmes(MARIN COUNTY, Calif.) — Actor and comedian Robin Williams is dead of a suspected suicide at the age of 63.
According to a release from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office in California, a 911 call made Monday morning at approximately 11:55 a.m. reported that a male adult — Williams — was found unconscious and not breathing inside his home in Tiburon. Shortly afterward, emergency personnel arrived on the scene. Williams was pronounced dead at 12:02 p.m.
The Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but an investigation into the cause of Williams’ death is ongoing.
Williams’ rep said in a statement obtained by ABC News, “Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”
Williams’ wife, Susan Schneider, said in a statement, “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”
It was announced in early July that Williams had entered a rehab facility to help maintain his sobriety. Previously, he had reportedly struggled with cocaine and alcohol addiction.
Williams was nominated for an Oscar four times, winning the best supporting actor prize in 1998 for his performance in Good Will Hunting. His other Oscar nominations were for his roles in Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, and The Fisher King.
Before his film career took off, Williams was the star of the Happy Days spin-off Mork & Mindy, which aired on ABC from 1978-1982. He starred as Mork, an alien visitor to Earth who roomed with a human named Mindy, played by Pam Dawber.
Williams went on to have a successful career as both a film actor and as a stand-up comic. In addition to the aforementioned movies, his credits included Awakenings, Hook, Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, The Birdcage, Patch Adams, Death to Smoochy, Night at the Museum, and Lee Daniels’ The Butler.
He most recently starred in the CBS comedy The Crazy Ones, which was cancelled earlier this year after one season.
As for his future projects, Williams was attached to a third Night at the Museum film and a second Mrs. Doubtfire movie.
In addition to his wife, Williams is survived by his three children: daughter Zelda, 25; and sons Zachary, 31, and Cody, 19.
On Twitter, Zelda quoted Antoine De Saint-Exupery’s The Little Prince: “You — you alone will have the stars as no one else has them…In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night…You -– only you — will have stars that can laugh.”
Zelda added, “I love you. I miss you. I’ll try to keep looking up.”
