Meredith Vieira on Returning to “The View”: ‘You Can’t Go Back’

ABC/Lou Rocco(NEW YORK) — Meredith Vieira, who served as the original moderator on ABC’s The View from its debut in 1997 until 2006, insists she has no desire to return to the show. While promoting her upcoming daytime talk show, debuting in September, at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in California on Monday, Vieira, 60, discussed The View.
According to Deadline.com, she said, “I knew after nine years it was time to leave The View,” noting, “I have a pretty good sense of timing and I always like to get out before something bad happens.”The TV journalist and talk show host has made several appearances on the program since leaving, and says she was treated “lovingly.” Vieira came to realize, however, that “you can’t go back,” explaining it would have seemed like the “crazy aunt going back.”Vieira’s remarks come on the heels of ABC’s announcement this past Thursday that Rosie O’Donnell, who co-hosted The View from 2006-2007, will return this fall.
Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy recently announced their impending departures from the show, while co-host Barbara Walters retired from her on-air role in May.

“The Bachelorette” Recap: Andi Chooses the Two Finalists

“The Bachelorette” Recap: Andi Chooses the Two Finalists

ABC/Rick Rowell(LOS ANGELES) — And then there were two on The Bachelorette. Andi Dorfman selected her finalists on Monday night’s episode of the ABC series: Nick Viall, a 33-year-old software sales executive from Chicago, and Josh Murray, a 29-year-old former professional baseball player from Atlanta.Chris Soules, a 32-year-old farmer from Arlington, Iowa, didn’t make the cut. In fact, he didn’t even make it to the rose ceremony.Andi went on solo dates with each of the three men in the Dominican Republic. First up was Nick, who joined her for a helicopter ride to the private Saona Island. They snorkeled and kissed in the water.Nick struggled to tell Andi that he loves her, so he created a fairy-tale book that recapped their romance to that point. The end of the book was filled with blank pages, implying that their future has not yet been written.Andi was touched by Nick’s creativity, and offered him a key to the fantasy suite. He accepted.Josh also landed an invite to the fantasy suite after exploring Santo Domingo with Andi. He again showed off his baseball skills, too, by joining some kids for a pickup game. He gushed to the cameras that he’s in love with Andi, who noted how drawn she is to his maturity.Chris’ date with Andi proved to be his swan song on The Bachelorette. It began with the two riding horses in the countryside — an activity that Andi wasn’t entirely comfortable with, given her lack of experience. As she pondered a life with Chris on a farm, she admitted to him that she would be taking a huge risk by leaving her job in Georgia as an assistant district attorney for his rural lifestyle. However, Andi refused to use Iowa as an excuse. Instead, she said she just didn’t feel strongly enough about their relationship to continue with it. She declared, “I’m trying and I’m trying but it’s not there.” She added, “My head and my heart don’t match up.”Chris’ early departure rendered the rose ceremony anti-climactic, with both Nick and Josh receiving a rose on the beach.Andi, Nick and Josh will remain in the Dominican Republic for the season finale, which airs on July 28. Next Monday, ABC will air the “Men Tell All” special. After the show wraps up its season, the latest spin-off in the Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise, Bachelor in Paradise, will premiere on Aug. 4. ABC has just announced that a few of Andi’s eliminated suitors, including Marcus Grodd, who was sent home after the hometown visits, will take part in Bachelor in Paradise. Jason Merritt/Getty Images(LONDON) — Lindsay Lohan is becoming an expat. The actress, who will appear in a London production of the play Speed-the-Plow later this year, said she is planning to move there full-time.”You guys have such a different outlook [about entertainment],” Lohan told the BBC. “It feels really good to turn on the TV and not see everything be about gossip.”Lohan, 28, said that the timing of her West End debut is perfect, because she’s ready to “experience something different.” That also means she’s committed to not missing any shows and to once and for all prove to the public that she’s serious about her craft, she added.”People have certain perceptions of me and for a long time people looked at me as kind of a celebrity which is something — that’s not [why] I ever got into this industry,” she said. Now, “people can focus on the fact that I’m in this industry because I’m an actress and an artist and not just someone you take photos of.”The actress also admitted to making mistakes in the past. However, she’s “so numb” to the gossip that tabloids spread about her and is focused on the future. “There are certain things that yes, I would change that I’ve put myself in bad situations but I don’t regret anything that’s happened,” she said. “I wouldn’t be who I am today. I wouldn’t have learned the things that I know. I wouldn’t be here doing this right now.”

Ariana Grande Bids Farewell to Nickelodeon Show “Sam & Cat”

ABC/Richard Harbaugh(LOS ANGELES) — Before Ariana Grande was a chart-topping pop star, she was the star of Nickelodeon’s Sam & Cat. Now that the network has announced the cancellation of the series, Grande has taken to Facebook to post a lengthy and heartfelt farewell to the show that made her famous.”So the news is out about Sam & Cat,” Grande begins. “I felt it wasn’t my place to make any sort of announcement so I kept quiet until now. I want to thank Nickelodeon for making a childhood dream of mine come true, for being a family to me, for being so accommodating and supportive of my multitasking with my music career, and for of course introducing me to many of my fans however many years ago.”Speaking about her character, Cat, Grande writes, “When I was younger, people loved Cat so much I used to pretend to be more like her. It took me a long time to be brave enough to separate myself and show people how different we actually are…. I think that’s honestly because I admire her so much. Her appreciation for life and everybody she encounters…She always saw negative obstacles as opportunities to make things good.”Grande goes on to say that she’ll always hold the character “near and dear to my heart,” adding, “She played such a huge part in my life I just wanted to express my appreciation for her and share some of the things I love most about her.” Grande then goes on to enumerate those things, including the fact that Cat was never “afraid of anything or anybody,” never let “people’s judgements hold her back from doing what she wanted,” never held back “her enthusiasm or joy for fear of appearing some sort of way,” and never lost her “sense of wonder. …To me that’s the bravest, most special thing about her,” writes Grande.Grande speculates about a future in which her character and another one on the show, Robbie, get married, and finishes by saying, “Thank you to my fans who have been with me since all of this started… you are the most loyal, dedicated and continuously loving supporters I could ever imagine. We’ve been through so much and you are still here… and we’ve got a long way to go.”Apparently realizing some might consider her note to be a bit long, Grande wrote on Twitter, “Sorry for the very long sappy thing haha. I felt in my heart it was very necessary!”

Jesse Grant/Getty Images for Netflix(NEW YORK) — Orange Is the New Black star Taylor Schilling earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for her role as Piper Kerman in the Netflix dramedy. And you’ll never guess how the actress celebrated.”It was insanity. Everybody came to set. The entire cast came,” she explained to People magazine. And although there was no cake, “there were lots of bowls of oranges.””People were putting them down their shirts. I put them down my shirt. They were throwing them, we were bouncing them off walls. It was bonkers,” Schilling continued.Schilling wasn’t the only one nominated from Orange Is the New Black. In all, the show garnered 12 Emmy nominations, and co-star Laverne Cox made history as the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for an Emmy Award.”It was a fantastic day,” Schilling added. “I am so proud of our show. I could not be more proud of everyone.”So how did Schilling find out she was nominated?”I was sitting in my apartment in New York, and I needed to go, but I realized I also was going to need to acknowledge the Emmy nominations before I left,” she explained. “I didn’t really want to be at home, so I just walked to the river, which is really close to my house, and then I took my phone off airplane mode and called my publicist. For some reason it was very important to me to be outside.” Schilling hasn’t started thinking of what she’ll wear to the Emmy Awards — which are being held August 25 at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles — but she knows what color she won’t wear.”Someone would have the right to throw eggs at me if I wear orange,” she quipped.

Katherine Heigl Denies Being Difficult, Calls Upcoming Show ‘Extraordinary’

Chris Haston/NBC(LOS ANGELES) — After leaving Grey’s Anatomy a few years back to pursue her movie career, Katherine Heigl briefly became one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood, only to suffer a string of flops and weather rumors of diva behavior. She returns to TV this fall with the NBC drama State of Affairs, in which she plays a CIA analyst responsible for briefing the president every day about threats around the world. At the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills on Sunday, Heigl was asked why she was returning to TV for the show that she also is producing. She answered, “Because it’s an extraordinary role and it’s an extraordinary opportunity and it’s an extraordinary story and it’s an opportunity for me to flex some different muscles and show a different side of myself as an actor and performer and storyteller.”In 2008, a year after she won an Emmy for Grey’s, Heigl famously removed her name from contention for that year’s awards, saying she wasn’t given “the material to warrant a nomination.” It was a comment she later regretted.Making things worse was a 2009 interview with Vanity Fair in which Heigl called Knocked Up — the film that arguably kicked off her movie career — “kind of sexist.” On Sunday, she addressed the rumors of her on-set behavior, telling journalists, “I certainly don’t see myself as difficult; I would never intend to be difficult. I mean, I think it’s almost important to everybody to conduct themselves professionally and respectfully and kindly. So I never — if I have ever disappointed somebody it was never intentional.”

Seth Meyers Says He Will Try to Be ‘Fair’ as Emmys Host

Lloyd Bishop/NBC(LOS ANGELES) — Now that the nominations for the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced, the focus shifts to the actual ceremony, which will be staged next month. This year’s host, Seth Meyers, says his opening monologue during the broadcast will be key for him. Speaking with the media at a Television Critics Association summer press tour panel in Beverly Hills over the weekend, he quipped, “Having been a nominee and a guest of the Emmys in the audience, that first 10 minutes is the best time to get the audience to laugh because as the night progresses more and more people are disappointed.”Meyers promises he won’t be offensive as host. Part of that has to do with the influence of his boss at Saturday Night Live and now Late Night, Lorne Michaels. He explained that Michaels “always stresses, try not to tell a joke about somebody that you then would want to leave the cocktail party if they showed up.”Meyers said a joke can be a “little negative” as long as it’s also “fair.”NBC, which airs Meyers’ Late Night, will broadcast the Emmys on August 25.

How Meg Ryan Learned to ‘Fake It’ for “When Harry Met Sally”

Photo by Alo Ceballos/GC Images(NEW YORK) — Anyone who’s seen When Harry Met Sally remembers the famous scene in which Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm.According to director Rob Reiner, it took the actress a while to get comfortable shooting it.”Meg was nervous. Obviously you’re in front of extras and all the crew members and everything. So the first few times we did it, she did it kind of weak. It was a little tepid,” Reiner told the Huffington Post. “And I said, ‘Look, let me show you what I want’ after a few takes that weren’t so good.”With that, Reiner said he sat opposite Billy Crystal and began acting out what he wanted her to do. As he pounded on the table and screamed, “yes” over and over, he was mortified to realize that his mother, who uttered the line, “I’ll have what she’s having” in the film, had been watching the whole thing.”But then Meg did it way better!” he said.As the movie celebrates its 25th anniversary in a few weeks, Reiner said that fans can celebrate by visiting Katz’s Delicatessen in New York City, where the scene was filmed.”There’s a sign that says, ‘This is where Harry met Sally,’” he said. “People go there and they act the scene out.”

Ramone’s death was announced on the band’s official Twitter account just after midnight Eastern U.S. time on Saturday: “We are saddened to announce the passing of Ramones founding drummer Tommy (Erdelyi) Ramone. #RIPTommyRamone.”
Ramone reportedly had been fighting bile duct cancer.
Born Erdelyi Tamas in Budapest, Hungary, Ramone came to the U.S. in 1957 and ultimately joined forces with Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee Ramone — aka Jeffrey Hyman, John Cummings and Douglas Colvin — to form their band.
The quartet made their live performance bones at New York’s seminal punk club, CBGB, beginning 1974.  Their first album, Ramones, was recorded in a week’s time in 1976 for a reported $6,400.  Though it wasn’t commercially successful then, the album since come to be regarded as one of rock’s most influential.  Tommy Ramone played drums on that album, as well as the two follow-ups, Leave Home and Rocket to Russia, both released in 1977.
Tommy Ramone left the band after their third album to concentrate on studio work and producing.  He was replaced by Marc Bell, aka Marky Ramone.  Tommy Ramone spent the years since then producing music, and more recently as one-half of the bluegrass duo Uncle Monk.
The Ramones disbanded in 1996 and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, one year after Joey Ramone died of lymphoma.  Dee Dee Ramone died that year of a drug overdose, while Johnny died of prostate cancer in 2004.
