Marvin Gaye Family Reacts to “Blurred Lines” Verdict

Marvin Gaye Family Reacts to “Blurred Lines” Verdict

ABC News (LOS ANGELES) — The family of late musician Marvin Gaye is hopeful for harmony.A Los Angeles jury Tuesday awarded the musician’s relatives more than $7.3 million in damages -- a cut of the profits from the 2013 smash hit “Blurred Lines,” which was found to have copied parts of Gaye’s 1977 hit “Got to Give it Up.”The decision capped a lengthy legal battle between Gaye’s family and the creators of “Blurred Lines,” Pharrell Williams, Robin Thicke and Clifford Harris, the rapper known as T.I. Under the ruling, Williams will pay about $1.6 million and Thicke will pay about $1.77 million. The jury ruled Harris -- who received a co-songwriting credit for “Blurred Lines” -- did not infringe on the Gaye copyright.Jan Gaye, the singer’s ex-wife, said in an exclusive interview with ABC News that she hopes the sides can mend fences.“We want to put together a tribute show, and maybe Pharrell will want to show up and participate,” she said, speaking inside the same studio where her former husband recorded his classic song.Gaye’s family was present through the 10-day trial, which centered around the two songs’ similarities. Both Williams and Thicke testified that while the songs are similar in feel, “Blurred Lines” didn’t copy Gaye’s work outright. Thicke even performed an impromptu medley of hits in the courtroom to show how pop songs can share melodies without being rip-offs.The “Blurred Lines” performers were not in court Tuesday. They later released a joint statement from Thicke’s representatives: "While we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward. 'Blurred Lines' was created from the heart and minds of Pharrell, Robin and T.I. and not taken from anyone or anywhere else. We are reviewing the decision, considering our options and you will hear more from us soon about this matter."One of the lawyers for the Gaye family, Richard Busch, said the case was not about songwriting inspiration, it was about copying.“It speaks volumes about who we are as a country that, no matter who you are, if you do something wrong there are consequences,” Busch said.Gaye, who rose to fame on the Motown Records label during the 1960s, showcased his musicality and social awareness with the concept albums “What’s Going On” and “Let’s Get It On,” and continued evolving as a musician until his death in 1984.The dispute over “Blurred Lines” began in 2013, when Thicke, Williams and Harris initially filed a lawsuit against the Gaye family to defend themselves against a public accusation that they stole parts of "Got to Give It Up." Later that year, the Gaye family counter-sued. Then, in 2014, a judge sided with Gaye's loved ones, ruling that their musicological experts provided sufficient evidence for the case to go to trial. After the verdict was reached, Gaye’s family was openly emotional outside the courthouse.“The jury up there, they didn’t have to go our way,” said Nona Gaye, the singer’s daughter. “They copied ‘Got to Give it Up’ and [the jury] heard it! Which was very important. They heard it, you know. It wasn’t just us.”Jan Gaye was thankful about the trial’s outcome. “It’s gratifying, I just felt filled,” she said.

Julie Andrews Says Lady Gaga’s a ‘Very New Good Friend;’ Tony Bennett to Sing at Gaga’s Wedding

ABC/Craig Sjodin(NEW YORK) — After Lady Gaga brought the house down the night of the Oscars with her Sound of Music medley last month, the star of the movie, Julie Andrews, publicly thanked her onstage.  But it turns out that Gaga had actually called the screen legend ahead of time, to make sure that she was okay with her planned performance."I've been a fan for a long time but I did not know her, and I only actually met her physically 45 seconds before she went on stage," Andrews tells ABC Radio about her relationship with Gaga as of the night of the Academy Awards.  However, says Andrews, "She had done me the honor of phoning me about 10 days before, asking if I minded the fact that she was doing The Sound of Music medley and she hoped she didn't offend.""She was singing all the songs in my original keys," Andrews recalled. "And I said on the phone, 'That's very high.' She said, 'Well, yes, I wanted to do them as a tribute to you.'"Andrews was knocked out by Gaga's performance of "The Sound of Music," "Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things” and “Climb Every Mountain,” as she tells ABC Radio. "The minute I got home from the Oscars I called her...I confirmed that I thought she was fantastic and had done a wonderful job, and I couldn't thank her enough.""She really did a wonderful thing with the medley. She sang superbly and then so lovingly handed me the evening on a platter, if you know what I'm saying," says the Oscar-winner. "As I say, I've been a fan for a long time but she's now a very new good friend." So, does Andrews think that Gaga has a career in musicals? Well, yes."I've been saying it ever since," she says. "I have, truthfully!"And in other "entertainment legends who are friends with Lady Gaga" news, her duet partner Tony Bennett tells the New York Post that Gaga and her fiance, actor Taylor Kinney, have asked him to sing at their wedding."They invited me to do it and, of course, I will," he tells the paper, adding, "She’s marrying a very wonderful man, very talented and very handsome. I think he’s going be highly successful in films. He’s a very nice person."  Bennett says of the nuptials, “All I know is, knowing Lady Gaga, it will be fabulous."Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.

Chloë Sevigny Thinks Jennifer Lawrence Is ‘Annoying’ and ‘Crass’

Marion Curtis for Netflix(NEW YORK) — Jennifer Lawrence's outgoing personality is charming to many fans, but in the spring issue of V magazine, actress Chloë Sevigny says she thinks the Hunger Games star is "annoying" and "crass."Sevigny, 40, made the comments while noting that she doesn't think she has "star quality," which may have hurt her career."So much is about marketing and selling the product," she tells the magazine. "They’ll have a really peppy funny girl on the talk show rounds, and everybody adores her and loves her and wants to be her or f**k her, and then so many more people want to watch the movie or TV show."She continues, "I love when a movie star is a great movie star. I think Angelina Jolie is a great movie star. I don’t think I can be that, or just be an actor. I don’t think I have the charisma, which is probably why I never reached another level."She adds, "I like Emma Stone. Whenever she’s herself, she’s really cute. Jennifer Lawrence I find annoying. Thicke, Williams and Harris, via a joint statement from Thicke's representative, said, "While we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward. ... “The Bachelor” Finale Recap: Chris Soules Is Engaged to Whitney Bischoff

“The Bachelor” Finale Recap: Chris Soules Is Engaged to Whitney Bischoff

ABC/Nicole Kohl(LOS ANGELES) — “The Bachelor" chose his soul mate on Monday night's season finale of the ABC series.Chris Soules proposed to Whitney Bischoff, a 29-year-old fertility nurse from Chicago. He popped the question moments after turning down the other finalist, Becca Tilley, a 25-year-old chiropractic assistant from San Diego.Chris, 33, told Whitney he loved her, and added, "Everything about this moment feels right." He then dropped down to one knee and asked her to marry him. Her response: "Absolutely."Chris put a ring on it and presented Whitney with the final rose of the season. The finale concluded with the newly-engaged couple kissing in a hayloft. On the one-hour After the Final Rose special, Whitney described herself as "the happiest girl in the entire world." She said she's just excited to be "normal" with Chris and not have to hide their engagement. There does not appear to be any wedding plans as of yet.Interesting tidbit: Whitney said she did not watch the Bachelor season, aside from footage of her dates with Chris. It was clear throughout the two-hour finale that Whitney was much more committed to a post-Bachelor romance with Chris than Becca was. Whitney charmed Chris' family in Iowa, and assured them she was prepared to make the move to his hometown of Arlington and become a mom.By comparison, Becca felt overwhelmed by the situation and admitted to Chris' family that she wouldn't relocate for him unless she was absolutely sure their romance would work. She also conceded she was not ready to say yes to a proposal.Becca's uncertainty spilled over into her final date with Chris. She told Chris she couldn't make any promises about their future. The tone was much different during Chris' final date with Whitney, spent on the farm and in his house. Whitney declared that she was confident of her feelings for him. After picking up an engagement ring from jeweler Neil Lane, Chris cut ties with Becca at his barn, saying, "I don't think it's fair for either of us to take that leap at this point."As she departed in a limo, Becca said she was in a "state of shock." She continued, "I could've seen him being someone I could be with and I could marry. I just wasn't there yet."Becca explained on After the Final Rose that she was confused by her relationship with Chris because she'd never been in love and had no other experiences to compare it to.After the Final Rose ended with a big announcement: There will be two "Bachelorettes" next summer. Two contestants from the just-concluded Bachelor season, Britt and Kaitlyn, have been cast in the role, but in a twist, 25 men will have, in the words of host Chris Harrison, the "ultimate say about who they think would make the best wife."It's not completely clear how this will work, but ABC promises that only one woman will be around in the finale to hand out a rose. We'll find out how Britt and Kaitlyn will co-exist when The Bachelorette begins its 11th season on May 18.After the Final Rose included an appearance by Jimmy Kimmel, who guest hosted a Bachelor episode earlier in the season. He presented Chris and Whitney with a special gift: a cow with a ribbon around it that he named Juan Pablo, after much-maligned 2014 "Bachelor" Juan Pablo Galavis.Kimmel made fun of Chris' final decision, joking to him, "Bottom line is, Becca wasn't into you."Ashley S., the contestant who mistook a pomegranate for an onion, returned, too. Last week, Harrison extended an invitation to Ashley S. on the Women Tell All special to appear on Bachelor in Paradise. She didn't give an answer at the time, so Harrison asked her again on Monday night. She cryptically stated, "I suppose I might be there."

ABC/Randy Holmes(LOS ANGELES) — Lena Dunham's relationship with fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff is still going strong, but they have no plans to marry -- at least not until same-sex couples have the right to do so in all 50 states."The idea of having a celebration that can't be fully shared among all the people in my life and all the people that we love just doesn't really feel like a celebration at all," the Girls star said on Monday's The Ellen DeGeneres Show."So until that's something that everyone can join into with no sense of being left out on any level, politically, emotionally, it's just not something that we're gonna do," she continued.Ellen DeGeneres, who is married to actress Portia de Rossi, chimed in, "We're on our way there."This isn't the first time Dunham and Antonoff have said they're holding off on tying the knot until same-sex marriage is legal throughout the country. Jussie Smollett of “Empire” Comes Out to Ellen DeGeneres

Michael Lavine/FOX(LOS ANGELES) — Ever since Jussie Smollett's character, Jamal Lyon, came out as gay on the hit drama Empire, there has been plenty of speculation about the actor's own sexuality, and now he is setting the record straight. The actor spoke with Ellen DeGeneres in a rare one-on-one backstage interview after taping an appearance on her talk show."It was really important to me to make sure that it got across that there is no closet,” Smollett, 31, said in the taped backstage interview. "There's never been a closet that I've been in. I don't own a closet, I got a dresser, but I don't have a closet. But I have a home and that is my responsibility to protect that home.""So that's why I choose not to talk about my personal life," he continued. "But there is without a doubt no closet that I've ever been in, and I just wanted to make that clear. But it was most important for me to make that clear to you on your show at this time in the world. And that's where I'm at."Before his conversation with DeGeneres, Smollett had refused to discuss his sexuality in interviews."Let's not read into it in the wrong way when I say that I don't talk about my personal life," he told DeGeneres. "It is in no way to hide or deny who God made me. You know? My mama knows. My mama likes me a lot. And, yes, I take her to The Sound of Music sing-along every single year. So, any questions? But honestly, we're human and we love and we do all that good stuff. So I'm honored for this opportunity and I'm honored to be here with you."Smollett's co-stars praised his decision to come forward, including Taraji P. Henson, who tweeted, "So proud of you!!!!! #BeTrue2U #LeadByExample #SHINEBABYSHINE."Gabourey Sidibe wrote, "You are a true Master of your craft, yourself and self worth. Madonna Calls Kanye West the ‘Black Madonna’

Madonna Calls Kanye West the ‘Black Madonna’

Photo by Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- There's only one Madonna. But even the pop star acknowledges that there is one artist who comes close. "Kanye is the new Madonna," the singer told the New York Daily News in an exclusive new interview. "Kanye is the black Madonna." Madonna is singing rapper Kanye West's praises after he collaborated with her on three tracks for her newest album, Rebel Heart, which will be released Tuesday. Besides music, the two share a love for pushing boundaries. "We know, and recognize, that we have that in common," she told the newspaper. "We’re comrades in the envelope-pushing genre." Just because Madonna recognizes West as one of her heirs doesn't mean she's ready to give up the spotlight. At 56, she's still challenging norms, including around aging. "People have always judged me, and given me s*** about one thing or another. Now they’re giving me s*** about age," said the singer, who caught flack about showing a little much of her backside at the Grammys. "I take care of myself. I’m in good shape. I can show my ass when I’m 56, or 66 -- or 76," she said, recently crediting her active lifestyle with saving her from injuries during her tumble at the Brit Awards. "Who’s to say when I can show my ass? It’s sexism. It’s ageism. And it’s a kind of discrimination." Most of the flack, she said, comes from women. "I feel I should be hearing support -- like, 'Good for you,'" she said, adding that one day she believes she'll be validated. "It’s like everything else," she said. "I’m opening doors for women behind me who one day won’t have to deal with this s*** that I deal with."
