Blaine County fire spokesperson Bronwyn Nickel said Wednesday that higher humidity levels are leading crews closer to containing the Beaver Creek fire in Idaho.

“We do feel pretty optimistic,” Nickel said.

But crews can’t say the same about the fast-growing wildfire threatening Yosemite National Park, one of America’s most pristine national treasures.

On Thursday, the Rim fire, as it has been dubbed, grew to 53,866 acres.  Earlier in the day, it was 5 percent contained but officials have downgraded that figure to just 2 percent.

The fire continues to endanger about 2,000 homes and outbuildings near the park.
