Demolition of Sandy Hook Elementary Begins in Newtown, Conn.
Published at | Updated at(NEWTOWN, Conn.) — Construction crews Thursday began the demolition process at the site of the worst grade school shooting in U.S. history. Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman shot and killed 20 children and six adults, is being torn down so a new school can be built on the same site.
Construction crew members have signed a non-disclosure agreement that prevents them from speaking about the work or photographing the pieces at the site.
According to the town’s First Selectwoman Pat Llodra, the demolition, which will begin slow and pick up over the next few days, is no “wrecking ball” job.
“It is rather a piece by piece, section by section removal,” Llodra said.
Contractors are demolishing the building piece by piece and destroying each so, as Llodra said, no brick ends up on eBay.
