(3) Creighton Cuts (13) LA-Lafayette’s Upset Bid Short
Published at(SAN ANTONIO) — Louisana-Lafayette held Doug McDermott scoreless for almost 14 minutes in the second half, but when it counted most, McDermott came through as the third-seeded Blue Jays fended off the 14th-seeded Ragin’ Cajuns 76-66 Friday, in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Louisiana-Lafayette (23-12) led 50-48 in the second half before Ethan Wragge hit back-to-back threes to put Creighton up for good.
McDermott finished the game with 30 points, seven of which came in the final 2:06 of the game, as Creighton (27-7) advances to the third round where it will meet Baylor on Sunday.
“We got away with one today,” McDermott said. “We have a veteran team and showed that down the stretch.”
Elfrid Payton scored a team-high 24 points for the Ragin’ Cajuns, which were playing in their first NCAA tournament since 2000.
