Sheriff’s Official Defends Release of Information Regarding Robin Williams’ Death
Published at(MARIN COUNTY, Calif.) — Sheriff’s officials in Marin County, California, who on Tuesday detailed the manner in which Robin Williams apparently committed suicide, are defending their decision to release the information to the public.
Marin County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Keith Boyd says in a statement to E! News that the sheriff’s office understands that such information can be disturbing to some, but under California law it is not permitted to deny access to it.
He adds, “Frankly, it would have been our personal preference to withhold a lot of what we disclosed to the press [Tuesday], but the California Public Records Act does not give us that kind of latitude. For the same reasons, we will likely be required to release to the media the 911 phone call we received from Mr. Williams’ residence and the fire dispatch tapes that resulted as well.”
During a press conference on Tuesday, Boyd detailed how Williams hanged himself. The actor and comedian was 63 years old.
E! News is reporting that a private memorial is planned for Williams in the San Francisco Bay Area.
