Official White House Photo by Pete Souza(WASHINGTON) — They aren’t his hometown team, but President Obama became an honorary NBA Spur on Monday.
“Look, I admit it, I’m a Bulls fan. It’s never easy celebrating a non-Bulls team in the White House. That’s all I’ve been able to do. So far,” the president said in an East Room ceremony honoring the 2014 NBA champs.
“But even I have to admit that the Spurs are hard to dislike,” he added.
Obama praised the team as the “U.N. of basketball teams” because of its diversity, noting that the Spurs hired the first female full-time assistant coach in the league, Becky Hammon.
The president also said the group overall is a “great metaphor for what America should be all about,” because of their sportsmanship and volunteerism, though he quipped that the roster is all “old” veterans.
“They’re working through some injuries on their quest to another title. But I’ll tell you what, if you guys need any tips on winning back-to-back, you know where to find me,” he joked.
