Pittsburgh Restaurant Pays Workers Salaries, Eliminates Tipping

Fuse/Thinkstock(PITTSBURGH) — There’s a revolution taking place in Pittsburgh, one that might start a ripple effect across the country.
It’s seems that a restaurant named Bar Marco is offering its workers full-time salaries, meaning they won’t have to scrounge for tips any longer to make ends meet.
As co-owner Robert Fry explains, the 20 people working at Bar Marco will each earn $35,000, which includes benefits and ten paid vacation days annually.
In return, each employee will be required to work between 40 to 44 hours weekly with two days and one night off.
Generally, salaries are almost unheard of in the restaurant industry, which makes Bar Marco’s move so unique.
Fry says that some of the workers who signed contracts also helped develop the compensation plan.
And while tipping will no longer be required of customers, any member of the staff who does get a gratuity will be required to donate it to something else revolutionary, a program that teaches youngsters cooking skills.
