The extremist group says it wants to exchange the pilot for a woman imprisoned in Jordan on charges relating to a 2005 bombing.

Leaders in Jordan say they are willing to release the woman in exchange for pilot Maaz al-Kassasbeh, who was shot down over Syria last month.

The woman in Jordanian custody, Sajida al-Rishawi, was convicted of being a member of al Qaeda involved in a triple bombing that killed numerous people.

Al-Rishawi was facing the death penalty until ISIS offered to trade her for the Jordanian pilot.

There are concerns however about the fate of al-Kassasbeh following the recent deaths of two Japanese nationals killed by ISIS militants.

Jordanian officials say they cannot free the female bomber unless they know for certain their pilot is alive.
