If it seems like guys devour their food faster than ladies, it’s no accident, according to South Korean researchers.

In an effort to probe obesity therapies since the way people eat can contribute to weight gain, scientists from Semyung University hooked up electrodes to the jaw muscles of two dozen men and two dozen women as they ate rice.

Measuring everything from bite size to total number of chews, the researchers discovered that, yes, men do take bigger bites and chew faster than women, who make their meals last longer by chewing more per gram of food.

But as for reaching any conclusions about whether speed or the way we chew influences weight gain or loss, the South Koreans admitted that they’ll have to conduct more experiments. Conventional wisdom, however, does suggest that people who eat fast and take large bites do tend to eat more.
