NHTSA Says Number of Vehicles Recalled in 2014 Highest Ever
Published at(NEW YORK) — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on Thursday that the number of vehicles subject to recall in 2014 was the highest total ever.
The agency noted 803 recalls involving 63.9 million vehicles, including 123 vehicle recalls “influenced by NHTSA investigation and enforcement efforts.” The news is not totally shocking, as 2014 was dominated by news about the recall of millions of cars due to faulty airbags manufactured by Takata Corporation.
NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind said in a statement that “these figures demonstrate the need for vigorous, effective oversight to remove safety defects from our highways.”
In 2013, the NHTSA reported 632 recalls involving just over 22 million vehicles.
