Rep. Ted Lieu Calls for Congressional Probe over Superbug CRE
Published at(LOS ANGELES) — A federal lawmaker is now calling on Congress to investigate the deadly superbug known as CRE, which has infected patients at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center in California and hospitals nationwide.
Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., says clearly there have been failures because the superbug has been able to spread inside hospitals.
The congressman wants an investigation to figure out what the Food and Drug Administration and medical device manufacturers have known about CRE and what they’ve done to fight it.
“We can certainly design a device that can be appropriately sterilized without causing people to die,” Lieu told ABC News Radio Monday.
The Democrat sent a letter to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on Monday, calling for hearings on the topic.
