“The Committee abhors and condemns the targeted and brutal killings of children” ISIS has allegedly committed. The report specifically notes accusations that ISIS has taken part in “several cases of mass executions of boys, as well as reports of beheadings, crucifixions of children and burying children alive.”

The U.N. also expressed concern about the children injured and killed by fighting, airstrikes, shelling and military operations, as well as those deaths and injuries caused by land mines, dehydration, starvation and heat in conflict-affected areas. A “high number of children,” the report states, are abducted by ISIS, traumatized by witnessing the murder of their parents and then subjected to physical and sexual assault.

In conclusion, the committee urges the Iraqi government to take all necessary actions to ensure the safety and protection of children and their families and enable them to leave areas affected by conflicts and to access basic humanitarian assistance. Specifically, the U.N. called for those perpetrators to be brought to justice, establishment of mechanisms to protect children, and assistance for those abducted by ISIS during their reintegration.
