When a fight broke out amongst inmates at a jail in the country’s Diyala province, prison guards tried to stop the altercation, but soon were overpowered and had their weapons taken, officials said.

According to witnesses, more than 50 people were killed and up to 200 were able to escape. Many of the prisoners who got away had been convicted on terrorism charges.

ISIS was also responsible for a prison break in 2013 when an attack allowed more than 500 prisoners to escape Abu Graib.
