IDAHO FALLS – Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio visited Idaho Falls Friday night and spoke to about 400 people during the Idaho Republican Party Summer Meeting at the Shilo Inn.

Afterwards he spoke exclusively with EastIdahoNews.com.

Nate Eaton, EIN Anchor: There’s several candidates running on the Republican ticket. Why are you the best man?

Marco Rubio: We have good candidates and I’m proud to be a member of a party with so much diversity and energy and great candidate. I honestly believe that we’re best positioned to convince the American people that the Republican party is the party of the future – a future that can be a new American century if we do what needs to be done.

Eaton: You mentioned during our speech this evening about family values. A lot of people feel that they’re under attack. Do you feel the same way?

Rubio: I’ve talked about that in the past and what we need from the government is a government that strengthens the family not competes with it and a government with a president that values that values – our traditional values – not tries to replace them. When I’m president of the United States, we’re gonna have an Attorney General and we’re gonna appoint judges that don’t just honor the second amendment and all the constitutional rights that we have but also defend the men and women in this country who hold traditional values against the discrimination that they’re now facing.

Eaton: You mentioned your age – that you’re 44 but feel 45. A lot of people say they want some young blood – somebody who will go up and change things up.

Rubio: Ultimately it’s not about the age of the person but it’s about the age of their ideas. Are their ideas relevant to this new century to the new challenges we face in a world that’s just dramatically different from the one we leave behind. The 21st century is a different era. It has real challenges but also historic opportunities and if we can embrace those opportunities, the 21st centuries gonna be better than the 20th century.

Eaton: What’s something that the average viewer watching right now might not know about you

Rubio:  Oh I don’t know if at this point if there’s not anything they don’t know about me. I just hope they understand that my number one commitment after being a husband and a father is ensuring that I can try to pay back some of the debt I owe this country for what it’s made possible for my family.   That’s what motivated me to get into public service. And it’s what motivates me to run for president.

Eaton: Thank you, Senator Rubio.
