Miley Cyrus and a large foam finger may have put twerk on the map at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, but the word can actually be traced back to around 1820.

Back then, it meant a “twisting or jerking movment.”

The editors who work on adding new dictionary entries are like detectives, following phrases back to times when Anglo-Saxons were jabbering about peasants and overlords.

Some 500 new words are now officially recognized like “Twitterati” describing users of the social media service Twitter and “Sext” to mean “a sexually explicit or suggestive message or image sent electronically, typically via a smart phone.”

Another one added this time was “Autotune.” A verb which means “to alter or correct the pitch of a musical or vocal performance; using a special device or software.”

And another good one, “Meh,” which is an interjection expressing a lack of enthusiasm.
