DAILY FORECAST: Cloudy with rain, snow and continued flooding

  Published at

IDAHO FALLS — Snow, rain and flooding are in the forecast for Monday, March 27.

A winter weather advisory has been issued in Lemhi County. Between 1 and 3 inches of snow is expected to fall in southern Montana and in Lemhi County. The storm warning expires this afternoon.

Flood conditions remain throughout eastern Idaho.

The Bear River in Bear Lake County has risen to above flood stage, measuring at 8.8 feet. The rising water, caused by snowmelt and runoff, has necessitated dam releases at Soda Springs and Grace. As a result, extensive flooding along streams and across fields and low lying areas is occurring along the Bear River west of Niter, to Thatcher, to Riverdale and Preston, and southward to the Idaho/Utah border.

Additionally, high flows are impacting Pegram, Dingle, Ovid, Saint Charles and Fish Haven. Widespread flooding across fields and low lying areas continues and numerous flooded basements across the area have been reported. Roads near Pegram also have been damaged by water flowing over the road.

Minor flooding is occurring near Carey and Picabo. Water continues to flow across several rural roads. Flooding is affecting several basements. Ditches, streams, and creeks across the advisory area remain full and flooding along creeks and low lying areas is expected to continue.

The Portneuf River in Pocatello is measuring 9.3 feet and minor flooding is occurring along its banks. The river is expected to rise to 10.2 feet by Friday night, causing moderate to significant flooding of nearby agricultural land.

Minor flooding is occurring in the Chesterfield and Pebble area. Water from the Portneuf River and King Creek are spilling into nearby fields. At this time, roads and homes are not affected.

Marsh Creek is at full capacity from McCammon to Inkom, with lowland and agricultural flooding ongoing just south of Inkom.

Rapid Creek in Inkom is also at full capacity and has reached the bottom of the bridge at Idaho Highway 15. Several homes are threatened along this creek, with sandbagging in progress.

The National Weather Service says snowmelt is causing flooding on U.S. Route 191 north of Malad between Devils Creek Reservoir and Power House Road. Water has also been reported on State Highway 36 between Interstate 15 and Deep Creek Reservoir.

With more precipitation in the forecast and snowmelt and runoff continuing, flooding along creeks and streams and across fields and low lying areas is expected to continue and may increase over the next several days.

The following cities remain under a flood watch until Monday afternoon: Burley, Rupert, Heyburn, Stanley, Clayton, St. Anthony, Ashton, Island Park, Driggs, Victor, Malad City, Oakley, Rockland, Henry, Soda Springs, Downey, Lava Hot Springs, Preston, Montpelier, Hailey, Ketchum, Bellevue, Arco, Challis and Mackay.

ROAD REPORT

No major road closures are being reported as of 8 a.m. Monday.

The Idaho Transportation Department is reporting difficult road conditions on U.S. Highway 20 from St. Anthony to the Montana border. Slush, rain and wet pavement are being reported.

Difficult conditions are also being reported on Idaho Highway 31 and Idaho Highway 32 near the Wyoming border due to slush and snow on the roadway.
