COALVILLE, Utah — One person was killed and westbound I-80 was closed Monday morning near the Echo Junction intersection after a multiple-vehicle collision, officials said.

The freeway was closed near the intersection with I-84 just before 7:30 a.m., Department of Public Safety officials said on Twitter. The westbound lanes will be closed “until further notice.”

The accident included “at least 30 vehicles,” according to Utah Department of Transportation spokesman John Gleason.

Utah Highway Patrol reported that none of the semitrucks involved in the crash were hauling hazardous materials.

A school bus transported people involved in the accident to a nearby church to stay warm, according to Department of Public Safety officials.

Two lanes were also temporarily closed on westbound I-80 near 1300 East, as well. The lanes were reopened just before 8 a.m., but delays were backed up to Foothill Drive for a while during the morning commute, according to the KSL Traffic Center.

Multiple other accidents were also reported on I-15 and I-215 during the morning commute, according to KSL Newsradio. Department of Public Safety officials tweeted that, as of Monday morning about 11 a.m., there had been a total of 125 crashes in 24 hours, including 16 with injuries and one fatality.

Details about the accidents were not immediately available. The identity of the person killed in the collision has not yet been released; details will be withheld until the family has been notified.
