UPDATE: US 20, ID 87 in Island Park reopen

UPDATE 5:30 p.m.

US 20 and Idaho Highway 87 have reopened following severe winter weather Monday.

Officials ask all drivers to use caution.

ORIGINAL STORY

ISLAND PARK — The Idaho Transportation Department has closed US 20 in Island Park from milepost 394 to the Montana State Line. Drivers are experiencing whiteout conditions and multiple crashes have been reported, according to Fremont County Sheriff Len Humphries.

Idaho Highway 87 is also closed between US 20 and the Montana State Line due to extreme weather conditions.

Interstate 15 between Exit 118 (Broadway Street in Idaho Falls and Exit 143 (Highway 33 near Roberts) is also closed not because of snow but due to high winds. Visibility is reduced and cars are not being allowed through.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning between 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Strong and damaging winds of between 35 to 45 mph are expected, with gusts in excess of 60 mph. The following areas will be impacted by the highest winds: Rexburg, Rigby, Idaho Falls, Blackfoot, Pocatello, Burley, Malad City, Oakley, and Rockland.
