SHAW, Mississippi – A grandmother in Shaw, Mississippi, is being held by authorities in connection with an infant’s death.

Authorities say a 20-month-old girl was stabbed and placed in an oven Monday night, according to WTVA.

The grandmother, 48-year-old Carolyn Jones, has been charged with first-degree murder. Her bond has been set at $500,000, WREG reports.

The state pathologist will have to determine if the child was dead prior to being placed into the oven or vice versa.

The sheriff held a press conference where he stated he’s never seen a crime as gruesome as this one.

“I’ve seen some horrific things, but this one is the most bothersome that I’ve ever encountered,” said Bolivar County Sheriff Kelvin Williams. “Anytime that there are children involved, that’s a different outlook to law enforcement.”

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the case.
