FORECAST: Wind advisory issued in eastern and central Idaho

IDAHO FALLS — It’s that’s time of the year, and so for the next several months, EastIdahoNews.com will be bringing you daily weather and roads reports each morning.

The only major weather concern in eastern Idaho is a wind advisory issued for Friday in the following communities: Pocatello, Blackfoot, American Falls, Shelley, Fort Hall, Burley, Rupert, Heyburn, Oakley, Albion, Almo, Malta, Rockland, Holbrook, Inkom, McCammon, Downey, Lava Hot Springs, Shoshone, Richfield and Carey.

The advisory is in effect from noon to 9 p.m.

Southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected with gusts up to 45 mph. The strong winds may create difficult driving conditions for high profile vehicles, light vehicles and vehicles with trailers, especially after 3 p.m.

The strongest crosswinds will be on:

  • Interstate 84 from Burley to the Utah border, including Yale, Idahome and Sweetzer Summit
  • U.S. Highway 93 from the Nevada Line to Bellevue
  • Interstate 15 between Pocatello and Blackfoot
  • Idaho Highway 39 from American Falls to Sterling and the surrounding Eastern Magic Valley, Southern Snake Plain, Southern Highlands and Fort Hall Tribal lands.

Weather conditions for Thursday

Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Rigby, St. Anthony, Mud Lake, INL

The region will be mostly cloudy today, but not as cool as yesterday. Highs of 45 to 55 are expected with southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph. There is a 20 percent chance of rain during the night with lows of 32 to 42 degrees with continued southwest winds.

Pocatello, Blackfoot, American Falls, Shelley, and Fort Hall

It will be mostly cloudy during the day and night with highs of 49 to 56 degrees and lows of 39 to 46 degrees. Southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph are predicted.

Island Park, Kilgore, Dubois, Spencer

Snow showers are likely during the morning above 6,400 feet, but they may turn to rain at lower elevations. Highs of 38 to 46 degrees are expected. At night, temperatures will drop to between 29 and 36 degrees. More snow is predicted during the night.

Ashton, Tetonia and Driggs

Snow or rain showers are likely today in the morning, with a decreased chance in the afternoon. Highs of 40 to 47 degrees are predicted during the day with lows of 32 to 39 degrees at night. Rain is possible during the night.

Grace, Soda Springs, Henry, and Bone

It’ll be mostly cloudy during the day and night with a slight chance of rain or snow. Highs of 42 to 49 degrees are expected with lows of 32 to 42 degrees.

Road conditions

The Idaho Transportation Department is reporting light snow, slush or icy roads on the following highways:

  • U.S. Highway 20 from the Montana border to Chester
  • Idaho Highway 32 between Ashton and Tetonia
  • Idaho Highway 47 between Ashton and Warm River
  • Idaho Highway 87 between Henrys Lake and the Montana border
