Help your kids win cash by doing Idaho history projects

IDAHO FALLS — For the past four years, the Bonneville County Heritage Association has awarded local kids money for creating school projects centered on Idaho history.

The tradition continues this year, and as many as 22 Bonneville County students could win cash prizes.

“The goal of the youth contest is to encourage kids to get involved with history and take an interest in it,” Bonneville County Heritage Association board member Todd Brown said.

With 22 categories, students have a wide variety of options to show off their talents. Some of the categories include map making, music, artistic creations and various types of creative writing. There are contests for the Junior Division (grades four to six) and Senior Division (grades seven to 12). Download the category information here.

“The reason we have so many kinds of contests is so there is a lot of choices for the kids,” Brown said.

The youth contest leads up to the annual Idaho Day Celebration on March 4, which commemorates the creation of the Idaho Territory by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.

On March 4, winners of the contests will be announced at the Colonial Theater during the local Idaho Day celebration. Contest entries will be displayed during the event for people to see. Some winners will be asked to perform or show off their entries during the event. There will also be an elementary choir coming to sing and participate.

The deadline for all of the entries is 5 p.m. Jan. 25. All entries must be taken to the Idaho Falls School District 91 Administrative Office and given to Brown. All youth in grades four to 12, living in Bonneville County can participate. Students can also enter and win in multiple categories.

Contest information can be found on the Bonneville County Heritage Association website. The information has also been passed out to local schools.
