List of mascot suggestions for Pocatello High School narrows and you can weigh-in

POCATELLO – The list of suggestions for Pocatello High School’s new mascot has been narrowed down to five and board members with Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 want your input.
The top four suggestions include Pocatello Bison, Pocatello Phantoms, Pocatello Thunder and Pocatello Mountain Lions. Two different mascots are being considered with the Pocatello Thunder name. One includes a bison and the other is a thunder mascot.
Community members can weigh-in by taking a survey. Participants will be asked to evaluate each potential mascot based on criteria set by the mascot selection advisory committee, which consists of Pocatello High School alumni, teachers, coaches, parents and community members. The committee’s process also included participation from the PHS student body leadership.
The criteria for evaluating each finalist include its ability to promote pride and school spirit by being uplifting and promoting positivity for everyone associated with the school, work equally well with girls and boys athletics, be distinct among Idaho high schools, continue to honor school heritage and history in a distinguished manner, emulate positive characteristics that can be reflected in students and staff and generate excitement through sounds and actions which could be used at events.
The list originally had nine suggestions after more than 185 ideas were submitted by community members. The board voted to replace the current Indian mascot in September. The Indian will remain the school’s mascot until the end of the school year in June.
The survey is open through Wednesday, Dec. 2. The results will be reviewed by the board during a work session on Dec. 8. At that time, the board will also consider putting the final mascot selection on the agenda for the regular board meeting on Dec. 15.
The survey can be taken online here or in-person at 3115 Pole Line Road between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
