Man with warrant arrested after allegedly cussing out authorities in 911 calls

BASALT — Deputies arrested a man with a felony warrant after multiple expletive-filled calls to 911.

On Wednesday just after 6 p.m., Bingham County Sheriff Deputies drove to the home of 34-year-old Rigoberto Oliva in Basalt after a 911 hang up. According to an affidavit of probable cause, dispatchers said that Oliva called 911 multiple times “cussing and telling them he was fine.”

It’s not exactly clear why Oliva called 911 in the first place, but authorities say they knew he had a felony warrant for his arrest. Deputies said in August that Oliva threatened a neighbor with a bottle and rocks, threatening to make the neighbor “his b***.”

He was subsequently charged with felony aggravated assault along with other charges for alleged threats to deputies.

Court documents detail how Oliva had been released without needing to post bail as long as he reported to pre-trial services. He was sent back to jail and released two more times. On Nov. 12, Oliva called his pre-trial services officer and said he would not be participating in the program.

A $30,000 warrant was issued for his arrest on Nov. 13. Deputies were able to catch up with him after the repeated 911 calls to dispatch.

Deputies say Oliva refused to pick up his phone or come outside with his hands up, according to the probable cause. Court documents do not detail how deputies ended up taking Oliva into custody, but he was arrested and taken to the Bingham County Jail.

Oliva remains held in jail this time on the $30,000 bail. He was charged with six misdemeanor counts of telephone harassment for the calls to 911. He was also charged with misdemeanor resisting arrest.

Although Oliva is charged with multiple crimes, it does not necessarily mean he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
