IDAHO FALLS — Police say a young man told them he stole a car Thursday night shortly after the owner reported it stolen.

The Idaho Falls Police Department arrived at a house on Tauthphaus Drive after someone stole a red Volkswagon beetle left unlocked and the engine running, according to court documents obtained by EastIdahoNews.com.

Shortly after the vehicle was reported as stolen, officers found the car parked on 14th Street. Drake Jay Williams, 18, of Idaho Falls was seen getting out of the car.

Williams reportedly started running and police demanded he get on the ground and stop. He didn’t listen and kept running through backyards, throwing his backpack on the ground and jumping over several fences. An officer eventually caught up with Drake and placed him in handcuffs.

“I can’t believe I was dumb enough to steal a car, dude,” Williams said, according to court documents.

Officers grabbed the backpack and found two plastic bags of marijuana, a glass pipe with marijuana residue, and a container with THC wax residue.

Williams is charged with felony grand theft and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.

He was booked into the Bonneville County Jail, where he remains held on a $15,000 bail.
