LOL Rexburg hosting ‘Girls Night Out’ comedy show this Thursday

REXBURG — LOL Rexburg is putting on a “Girls’ Night Out” show featuring comic Jenna Kim Jones this Thursday night at the Romance Theater in Rexburg.

Jones’ show is the latest in a series of performances that has brought top-notch family-friendly comics to east Idaho. Past performances have featured comics like Nick Hoff, Andy Gold and Allan Goodwin. (Click here for tickets.)

Jones’ comedy focuses on relatable slice-of-life experiences and the triumphs and travails of motherhood, LOL Rexburg owner Aaron Perkins said.

“I’m excited (Jones) is coming here to do a show for us,” Perkins told EastIdahoNews.com. “She’s a super-talented comic with an amazing background. She’s super funny and totally relatable because a lot of her comedy is about being a mom and a spouse.”

Jones nursed a life-long interest in comedy but struggled to figure out how to turn her interest into a career. Then, after graduating from college, she spent four years working on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” as a script production assistant.

“I met a ton of stand-up comics (at ‘The Daily Show’),” said Jones. “I realized ‘Oh my gosh, this is how I could do comedy. This would be perfect for me.’ I always wanted to write my own material and I loved performing and so it just felt like a really great fit.”

Jones took the opportunity to soak up as much information she could use in her quest to be a comic as possible while at “The Daily Show.”

“I was near the writers,” she said. “I was really like a fly on the wall. I got to see the whole process of TV and comedy writing and I tried to absorb as much as I possibly could. Then I decided I wanted to do stand-up on my own, so I got married and left there to move to Los Angeles.”

Comedy wasn’t an easy field for Jones to break into and it requires her to constantly create new material and massage it into a presentable form.

“It was really hard in the beginning,” Jones said. “I would do open mic nights and practice jokes and write and write. Then, after trying over and over again, things started to click and I started to get booked for more shows and the rest is history. Now I get to travel and do stand-up and I absolutely love it.”

Jones said her comedy comes out of her everyday life and the experiences she has and that resonates with people from all walks of life.

“I think the thing you have to be good at in stand-up is figuring out who you are on stage, what your voice is, and what you want to say,” she said. “Really, my comedy comes from life and the things that I find really funny.”

“With my comedy, I think you’ll find that women really relate to it,” she added. “I’ve had so many women come up to me after shows and say ‘Oh my goodness! I feel like you were talking to me! How did you know that’s how I feel about it?’ I think women are an underserved population in comedy, and I have found that I can really identify with women and talk to them and that’s been a fun journey for me in my comedy. Really, whatever I find to be funny in life, I try to turn into stand-up so other people can enjoy it, too.”
