You have to see this! Pet zebra on the loose gets captured, airlifted to safety
Published atSOMETHING YOU DON’T SEE EVERYDAY — A runaway pet zebra that quickly became an internet sensation was rescued in dramatic fashion on Sunday.
The zebra, named Ed, was reported missing by his owner in Tennessee on May 31, 2025, according to a Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post. After making his getaway, he was seen not only running through neighborhoods but also on an interstate.
The sheriff’s office said Ed “became an international sensation through social media memes throughout the country” while on the loose.
Despite all the attention, Ed ended up escaping into a wooded area and disappeared until he was spotted on June 5, 2025.
“Ed was located in a pasture located near the Buchanan Estates subdivision near Interstate 24,” the Facebook post explained.
Sheriff’s deputies established command with the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency on June 8, 2025. That same day is when video of Ed being rescued was taken, and chances are you’ve never seen a video like this.
Footage shows Ed being airlifted in a net as he spins around and around in circles in the sky. After eight days on the run, “Zebra Ed” and his adventures came to an end as he was flown to a waiting animal trailer and eventually reunited with his owner.
The video has been viewed over half a million times on the sheriff’s office Facebook page alone. Watch it for yourself in the video player above.
