Golf tournament raising funds for local real estate agent’s cancer treatments

IDAHO FALLS — A golf tournament on Thursday, at the Links at Teton Peaks in Driggs, is accepting teams and sponsors to support well-known charity organizer Juan Contreras in his fight with cancer.
Tyson McFarland is helping organize the 18-hole golfing tournament, where four-person teams can sign up for $500 a team. The event begins at 8 a.m. with registration and breakfast, golf starts at 9:30 a.m., and ends around 3 p.m. with a presentation to Contreras.
“We’ve known Juan for years,” McFarland said. “(I’m) trying to rally the real estate community and really anybody in Idaho Falls to help him out.”
Once Contreras went public with his diagnosis, he was surprised by the surrounding support from friends and family. This includes the golf tournament, a GoFundMe, and his son reaching out to Heart Productions, which also organized a concert.
“Once I made it public, I had friends reach out and want to help. This (the golfing tournament) was one of the ways,” Contreras said.
Contreras was diagnosed with Double Hit Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma back in December 2025. Ever since then, doctors have pushed different types of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and now clinical trials. Though he still has his good and bad health days, Contreras is slowly getting back on his feet and hopes to attend the golf tournament if his health holds up.
“It is an amazing course,” Contreras said about the Links at Teton Peaks. “The ruff is three feet tall. You’re not gonna find your ball,” he said with a chuckle. “But you can see the Tetons.”
Although Contreras works as a real estate agent, he is also known for his various charities and service work. Whether it be organizing Thanksgiving meals for up to 1,000 people, helping women learn self-defense, organizing blood drives, and so much more, Contreras enjoys giving to the community.
“I like doing it,” Contreras said. “But I never imagined so many people coming out and wanting to do stuff for me.”
Any interested golfers are still welcome to register using the QR code on the Facebook post. Otherwise, donors are welcome to give to the GoFundMe being organized by Elias Trejo. There will also be a silent auction at the golf tournament, where participants may either donate or purchase an item.
