Police identify man who died from self-inflicted gunshot wound inside Rigby bar

RIGBY — Authorities have identified the man who died on Saturday after he reportedly shot himself in a Rigby bar after a confrontation with law enforcement.
The Rigby Police Chief, Allen Fullmer, has identified the man as Cory Carter Bates, 45, of Lewisville.
According to a news release from the Rigby Police Department, Bates was waving his handgun around at the Off Ramp Bar and Grill and causing a disturbance.

Rigby Police officers and Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded around 1:45 p.m.
“While officers were giving him commands to drop the firearm, he turned the firearm on himself,” according to the news release.
Officers administered first aid until EMS arrived. Bates was later pronounced dead at the scene.
South State Street was closed for about four hours. The Rigby south exit of U.S. Highway 20 was also closed.
Idaho State Police, Central Fire and Ambulance, and Idaho Falls Ambulance also responded to the incident.
“We offer condolences to the family,” the police department said.
