An underwater photo released by Indonesia’s National Search And Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) on Jan. 7, 2015 shows wreckage from AirAsia Flight 8501 in the Java Sea. BASARNAS handout(SURABAYA, Indonesia) — Indonesian officials confirmed Wednesday that the tail of downed AirAsia Flight 8501 has been found in the Java Sea.
The discovery of this piece of the plane is the most significant since the aircraft crashed on Dec. 28, killing all 162 people on board, because the tail usually holds the black boxes that can give investigators clues as to why Flight 8501 went down.
According to Bambang Soelistyo, chief of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency, search teams located the tail, which has an “A” on it, the airline’s logo.
Meanwhile, another body from the wreckage was recovered, making 40 corpses found so far.
Aviation officials are still uncertain about what caused Flight 8501 to crash shortly after take-off from Indonesia en route to Singapore.
