FIFA Suspends Secretary General Jérôme Valcke
Published at | Updated at(ZURICH) — FIFA has placed one of its top executives on leave.
On Thursday, FIFA announced in a statement that Secretary General Jérôme Valcke was suspended because of allegations involving corruption within the World Cup.
“FIFA today announced that its Secretary General Jérôme Valcke has been put on leave and released from his duties effective immediately until further notice,” said the statement. “Further, FIFA has been made aware of a series of allegations involving the Secretary General and has requested a formal investigation by the FIFA Ethics Committee.”
The allegations, according to The Guardian, said that Valcke was involved in a World Cup ticket scheme where tickets were sold at high prices above the face value. The Guardian reports Valcke was set as the beneficiary of an agreement with the company set to sell the tickets, but the contract was canceled.
A consultant for JB Sports Marketing, the company involved, made the allegations public on Thursday in a press briefing.
