Illinois Fires Bruce Weber
Published at(NEW YORK) — After nine seasons in Illinois, the Fighting Illini parted ways with head basketball coach Bruce Weber on Friday.
The firing comes one day after the first round loss in the Big Ten tournament to Iowa. After losing to North Carolina in the national title game in 2005, the team has failed to get past the second round since.
VCU’s Shaka Smart is expected to be a candidate for the job, according to ESPN’s Andy Katz.
Weber said recently that the buyout on his contract is $3.9 million. He went 210-101 during his nine seasons in Illinois.
