“Marvel’s The Avengers” Earns $200M, Smashes Box Office Records
Published at(NEW YORK) — Iron Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and their friends were box office heroes over the weekend.
The all-star superhero film Marvel’s The Avengers earned an estimated $200.3 million, easily the highest-grossing debut weekend for a movie in domestic box office history. The total shatters the old record of $169.2 million set last year by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
A few other tidbits from The Avengers’ big weekend:
— The Avengers reached the $200 million mark faster than any other movie in U.S. box office history.
— On Friday, the day it opened, The Avengers enjoyed the second-highest single-day gross of all time with $80.5 million. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 made $91.1 million on its first day of release.
— The Avengers established a new record for a Saturday, with $69.7 million.
— The Avengers has now earned an estimated $641.8 million worldwide since it opened overseas about two weeks ago.
After two weekends on top, Think Like a Man fell to second place, with just $8 million.
