First I-15 construction project begins Monday

POCATELLO — The first of 10 major construction projects on Interstate 15 begins Monday.

The Idaho Transportation Department will begin the process of resurfacing six miles of I-15 between the Fort Hall Reservation Boundary at milepost 76 and Burns Road in Blackfoot.

ITD also will upgrade guardrails and improve clearance below the bridge structures at the Railroad Overpass, Fort Hall Interchange and Sheepskin Road, according to an ITD news release.

Additionally, crews will build and pave crossovers in the I-15 median over the next three weeks. In early May, motorists will cross over to the southbound lanes of I-15 while crews repave the northbound lanes. Construction will move to the southbound lanes after Memorial Day. During construction, I-15 will be reduced to one lane in each direction in the project area.

“We are encouraging motorists to plan extra time to reach their destinations during construction on I-15. Please pay attention to signage and new traffic patterns, and remember that the speed limit will be reduced,” ITD District 5 Engineering Manager Dan Harelson said.

The next two I-15 construction projects will begin in mid-May. ITD will repair six bridges in Pocatello and reconstruct I-15 between the Lava Beds rest area and Bonneville County Line. By the summer of 2017, multiple work zones will be in place within the 190 miles of I-15 between the Utah and Montana borders.

ITD plans to invest $95 million into I-15 improvements in 2017 and 2018, and construction is expected to continue for the next several years. The improvements include resurfacing 44 miles of pavement, fixing deteriorating concrete and guardrails on bridges, improving bridge clearance and replacing sign structures.
