Tigers Take Sole Possession of First in AL Central
Published at(DETROIT) — For the first time since July 24, the Detroit Tigers (83-72) are in sole possession of first place in the AL Central, after defeating the Kansas City Royals (70-85), 5-4.
Tigers shortstop Johnny Peralta hit a ball in the bottom of the eighth that looked like it would result in a double play, but Andy Dirks slid into second, broke up the play, allowing Don Kelly to score the game-winning run.
“I was just trying to break up the double play and try to get a piece of him any way I could to help us score that run,” Dirks said. “That’s just kind of the way you play baseball.”
Detroit has won 10 out of their last 15 games.
