Report: N.Y. Yankees Sign LHP Matt Thornton
Published at(NEW YORK) — The New York Yankees and free agent reliever Matt Thornton agreed to a two-year contract on Tuesday, worth $7 million according to ESPN. The deal is pending a physical.
The 37-year-old Thornton will most likely serve as the Yankees main left-handed out of the bullpen, a role that belonged to Boone Logan in 2013. Logan left New York as a free agent this off-season for the Colorado Rockies, signing a three-year deal at $16.5 million.
Thornton split last season between the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox, compiling a record of 0-4 with a 3.74 ERA in 60 appearances. He struck out 30 batters in 43 1-3 innings of work. The Red Sox left Thornton off their post-season roster.
Thornton was selected to the All-Star team in 2010.
