BLACKFOOT — A story of faith, family and freedom is coming to the stage this summer as the Blackfoot Community Players and Snake River Theater Company team up to present “The Prince of Egypt.”
The biblical musical will be performed at the Blackfoot Performing Arts Center, at 870 S. Fisher Street, on July 9, 10, 11 and 13. Additional performances are scheduled at the venue on July 16, 17, 18 and 20. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m.
Based on the story of the Old Testament prophet Moses, the roughly two-hour musical follows him from his upbringing as an Egyptian prince to the discovery of his Hebrew heritage, his growing conflict with his brother Ramses, and his mission to free the enslaved Hebrews from Egypt.
The production brings some of the Bible’s most familiar moments to the stage, including the burning bush, the 10 plagues and the parting of the Red Sea. It features music by Stephen Schwartz, including the well-known song “When You Believe.”

Rooted in a biblical story, the musical explores broader themes of family, identity, freedom, faith and moral courage.
Jana McBride of Snake River Theater Company, who is co-directing the production with Jonathan Williams of the Blackfoot Community Players, said the show is especially well-suited for families, church groups and musical theater fans, with children as young as 6 likely to enjoy the production.
“There are a lot of children in the play and a children’s chorus,” McBride said.
A unique aspect of the local production is its double casting.
“To bring ‘The Prince of Egypt’ to life, we’ve double-cast seven of our leads, giving more performers a chance to take on these iconic roles,” McBride said.

McBride, who has been directing productions in the area since 2014, said this particular show has brought her a special sense of satisfaction because she has watched several of its leading performers grow up in theater.
“This play is full of leads who grew up in our community theater and are back home again to participate in community theater,” she said.
For McBride, the heart of the production ultimately comes down to family, faith and the choices that shape a leader.
“It’s about the importance of loving God and following his commandments to become a great leader,” she said.
