Coldwater Fire grows to 3,000 acres in Power, Cassia counties

AMERICAN FALLS — The Coldwater Fire, which broke out Thursday evening in Cassia County and Power County, grew to an estimated 3,000 acres overnight as nearby residents were told to be prepared should conditions worsen.
The Power County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls around 5:30 p.m. Thursday reporting the blaze between Barkdull and Georges roads near the Coldwater Hill Rest Area along Interstate 86.
As of Friday morning, the fire was exhibiting running fire behavior approximately 15 miles northeast of Malta near Barkdull Road, according to the U.S. Wildland Fire Service Great Basin.

The fire remained active overnight, particularly on the southwest side. However, officials said roads and dozer lines held through the night. Fire crews were briefed Friday morning and returned to the fire line, where they are using full-suppression tactics.
The Power County Sheriff’s Office said the fire has progressed quickly and residents in the area have been notified to remain ready in case conditions change.
“At this time, no evacuations have occurred, but residents of the area have been notified and are in a ready state,” the sheriff’s office said.
Officials are asking the public to stay away from the area unless absolutely necessary to allow law enforcement and firefighting equipment to move safely.
The fire is burning on Bureau of Land Management property in grass, juniper and brush. It is believed the fire was caused by lightning, but the exact cause is still under investigation.
Resources assigned to the Coldwater Fire include four engines, two 20-person hand crews, a dozer and overhead personnel. The Rockland Fire Protection District and American Falls Fire Protection District are also assisting.
No road closures have been reported.
Fire officials estimate containment by 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, with the fire expected to be controlled by 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2.
