POCATELLO — A 65-year-old Pocatello man died after suffering an apparent medical emergency while driving on Interstate 84 in Jerome County on Tuesday.

The crash happened around 11:50 a.m. near milepost 196.5, according to Idaho State Police.

Police say the man was driving a 2011 Toyota Avalon westbound when he experienced an unknown medical incident. The vehicle went off the left side of the interstate before swerving back onto the roadway and then traveling off the right side.

The Toyota went down an embankment and struck an Idaho Transportation Department fence before coming to a stop.

The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

The Jerome County Sheriff’s Office, Jerome Rural Fire Department and Magic Valley Paramedics assisted at the scene.

Authorities have not yet released the man’s name.
