Man charged after alleged accidental shooting that killed his daughter

PLANO — A man has been charged after he reportedly accidentally shot and killed his daughter while cleaning his gun.
Scott Perrenoud, 74, is charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and an enhancement for the use of a deadly weapon while in the commission of a crime, for the death of 49-year-old Lesa Perrenoud.
Perrenoud is being represented by his attorney, Joshua Garner. EastIdahoNews.com reached out to Garner for a comment, but we have not yet heard back. If we do, we will update this story with his response.
According to court documents, on June 28, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a report of a woman with a gunshot wound at a home located at 4021 North 5725 East.
Scott was reportedly cleaning his firearms at the kitchen table but moved to the living room as the family was preparing to eat.
Deputy reports say that Scott was seated on a couch while cleaning his Ruger Charger .22-caliber long rifle, and Lesa was standing in the kitchen.
According to Scott, he inserted a magazine into the rifle and, after checking the chamber, closed the action.
Scott reportedly told deputies that he did not think the magazine contained any rounds.
Wanting to check the force it takes to depress the trigger, Scott says he used a trigger pull scale and, while holding the rifle, pulled the trigger, which shot Lesa in the back.

“Scott believed he was pointing the barrel toward a glass door in the living room to the right of where Lesa was standing,” says court documents. “The rifle discharged, and Lesa was struck in the back and immediately went to the ground.”
An autopsy was performed and reportedly showed that Lesa was shot in the right shoulder blade, and the bullet was found in the left neck area.
“Although not intentional, through the actions of Scott, Lesa was killed,” says the affidavit. “The manner in which Scott was operating a firearm was careless and negligent, specifically operating the firearm with people present, not being aware of where the firearm was pointed, and not being aware of the condition of the magazine.”
Scott was not arrested but was present for an initial appearance on Sept. 8. He is expected to appear for a district court arraignment on Nov. 2.
If convicted, Scott could face up to 25 years in prison.
Though Scott has been charged with these crimes, it does not necessarily mean he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until they are proven guilty.
